About the Role

Performs entry-level and complex attorney work for the Child Support Division. Work involves representing the State's interest in judicial and administrative matters, and providing legal advice, consultation, and technical assistance to the Child Support Program and staff. Works under close, moderate, or general supervision, with minimal, limited, or moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

  • Review and approve pleadings.
  • Review and approve proposed orders.
  • Answer legal questions of Child Support Officers in the office.

Responsibilities

  • Knowledge of Family Law and the Texas Family Code.
  • Skill in legal writing, mediation, and negotiation.
  • Skill in serving as a trial lawyer, preparing sound opinions, conducting investigations, and performing legal research.
  • Skill in using a personal computer for word-processing and data entry/retrieval.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
  • Skill in working under pressure and meeting deadlines.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service.

Requirements

  • Graduated from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor degree.
  • Licensed as an attorney by the State of Texas.
  • Member in good standing with the State Bar of Texas.
  • Must not own a family law practice (conflict of interest).
  • Must pass a drug test, driver's license check, Department of Justice criminal history background check, and provide a valid social security card.

Two years' experience in handling Family Law cases, jury trial experience, experience in a fast-paced environment, and ability to read, write, and speak Spanish are pluses but not required. Can apply before bar exam but will not start until Bar Number is issued.

Schedule

Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 5:00 pm.

Pay

This will be an hourly position.

  • $39.00 per hour for Asst. Atty I (0-1 years or just graduated and passed bar exam).
  • $43.00 per hour for Asst. Atty II (all other experience accepted).
