Assistant Athletic Trainer I

About the role

As part of the California State University (CSU) system, Cal Poly Humboldt is seeking an Athletic Trainer I to join the Department of Athletics. This is a full-time, benefited, exempt, 12 month pay plan, regular position with a one-year probationary period.

Responsibilities

  • 40% - Injury Treatment/Rehabilitation: Prevent, recognize, and assess athletic injuries. Use a variety of therapeutic modalities in accordance with physician orders including but not limited to heat, cold, light, sound, and electricity, and rehabilitation and exercise equipment. Apply bandages, tapes, and braces to prevent and treat injuries. Inform coaching staff and other health professionals on the status of injuries and treatment plans. Implement rehabilitation programs for athletic injuries using appropriate therapeutic modalities and treatments. Monitor rehabilitation plans and progress. Assist with and assign student-athletes for therapy as needed. Consult with more senior Athletic Trainers, physicians, and other health care staff on injuries and treatment plans and coordinate with coaching staff. Maintain equipment and cleanliness of the athletic training and rehabilitation facilities.

  • 20% - Evaluation/Prevention/Conditioning of Injuries: Regularly evaluate the physical condition of student athletes. Advise students on how to prevent injuries and maintain their physical condition. Counsel athletes and staff regarding conditioning, athletic training, and rehabilitation. Assist in designing conditioning programs to prevent injuries.

  • 15% - Home & Away Game & Practice Health Care: Attend practices and athletic events to provide medical emergency coverage to student athletes. Travel with sports teams to away games as needed.

  • 10% - Administrative Recordkeeping: Maintain updated files and accurate medical records of the following: athletic injuries, medical insurance, medical history, injury referrals, conditioning programs, schedules, and other necessary data.

  • 10% - Home & Away Game & Practice Health Care: Coordinate clinical and physical appointments between athlete and SHC or outside referral. Inform coaching staff and other healthcare professionals regarding injury status and treatment plans. Daily control of infection and sanitation of the training room by cleaning and disinfecting all equipment, floors, and tables.

  • 5% - Other Duties as Assigned: General Knowledge: Principles and practices of athletic training including conditioning, injury prevention, injury assessment and rehabilitation. Full range of therapeutic modalities and their practical use and physiological basis. Other therapeutic preventions and treatments such as taping, bracing, and therapeutic massage techniques. Effective use of rehabilitation and exercise equipment. Rules, regulations, and guidelines established by the campuses' governing national collegiate athletic associations pertaining to student-athletes, their training, sports medicine care, and health and safety. Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) standards for handling blood borne pathogens. Maintaining medical records, including Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards. Following insurance procedures.

Qualifications

  • Possess and maintain Board of Certification (BOC) certification for Athletic Trainer.

  • Possess and maintain valid state-issued driver's license with a clean driving record.

  • Current CPR/AED certification under the guidelines of the NATABOC.

Benefits

Athletic Trainer I, 12 Months, Assistant Athletic Trainer I, CSU Classification Salary Range: $4,482 - $6,530 per month (Step 1 - Step 20). Final salary placement is commensurate with experience, internal equity, and budget considerations.
