About the role

The Assistant Athletic Trainer will assist in the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and care of athletic injuries and medical concerns. This role involves developing, coordinating, and administering a comprehensive sports medical program for Intercollegiate Athletics, as well as performing professional and administrative services as assigned. The position requires presence at all home and some away competitive events, maintaining standard office hours, and being on call for all practices. The incumbent must adhere to the athletic philosophy of the UC San Diego Athletic Department, NCAA, and California Collegiate Athletic Association, with a commitment to diversity in all its forms. This position requires night, weekend, and travel commitments.

Responsibilities

• Assist in the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and care of athletic injuries and medical concerns.
• Develop, coordinate, and administer a comprehensive sports medical program for Intercollegiate Athletics.
• Perform professional and administrative services as assigned.
• Be present at all home and some away competitive events, maintain standard office hours, and be on call for all practices.
• Use skills as a seasoned, experienced athletic training professional with a full understanding of industry practices and campus policies and procedures; resolve a wide range of issues.
• Demonstrate good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
• Maintain discretion and confidentiality in handling sensitive matters involving athletic injuries and treatments.
• Stay current with applicable rules and standards of the NCAA, Big West Conference, and other relevant associations.
• Work collaboratively with athletes, team physicians, faculty, staff, and others in the athletic department.
• Organize and prioritize work assignments to meet required timelines.
• Apply manual therapy skills applicable to orthopedics and sports medicine.
• Utilize various athletic training aids (tape, wraps, modalities, exercise programs, massage, etc.).
• Apply knowledge of coaching principles and techniques for athletic injury prevention.
• Train and instruct student interns using sound teaching techniques.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or graduate equivalent from a CAATE-accredited athletic training education program; Master’s preferred.
• One year (two years preferred) post-graduate experience in athletic training under the direct supervision of an NATA-certified athletic trainer.
• Current certification in American Red Cross First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer with AED, or equivalent certification from another agency (Instructor level preferred).
• NATABOC certification in good standing.
• Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications (Instructor level preferred).
• Thorough skills in athletic injury prevention and administration of therapeutic modalities, devices, and rehabilitation techniques.
• Detailed knowledge of the competencies and domains of athletic training.
• Thorough knowledge of electronic medical records systems.
• Strong ability to work collaboratively with a diverse client group.
• Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills (verbal and written).
• Strong manual therapy skills applicable to orthopedics and sports medicine.
• Knowledge of sound coaching principles and techniques for athletic injury prevention.
• Knowledge of organizational and management principles for athletic training operations.

Special Conditions

• Valid Driver’s License may be required; incumbent may participate in the DMV Pull program and must maintain a clean DMV record.
• Mandated reporter of known or suspected child abuse or neglect under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA).
• Campus Security Authority (CSA) under the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.

$73,800 - $86,275 / year
