Assistant Athletic Director, Athletic Communications

Under general supervision and in conjunction with the goals and vision of the Director of Athletics, develops and directs an athletic communications program that promotes ASU athletics, coaches, and athletes in all appropriate venues and increases both public participation in and local, state, and national recognition of Ram and Rambelle athletics.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise athletic communications assistants, graduate assistants, student assistants, and voluntary assistants in the Office of Athletic Communications.
  • Coordinate and direct home event coverage for all aspects of athletic communications.
  • Promote ASU athletes, coaches, and sports through media, advertising, promotional, public relations, and marketing strategies.
  • Monitor and update angelosports.com with timely and accurate information, including game accounts, features, announcements, and news.
  • Compile statistical and historical information on individual athletes and teams; prepare reports for the NCAA and LSC.
  • Direct and oversee sports media relation strategies and manage the Assistant Director of Athletic Communications and graduate/student assistants.
  • Develop and execute strategies for streaming ASU Athletic events.
  • Promote positive media relations with local, state, and national news organizations and coordinate coach and student-athlete appearances with media.
  • Assist with game management, including set up, statistical reporting to meet NCAA and LSC requirements, and organization of press box and media area activities.
  • Provide data and metrics on streaming viewership and social media usage.
  • Ensure compliance with all NCAA, LSC, Angelo State University, and Texas Tech University System policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in journalism, communications, marketing, public relations, advertising, or a closely related field.
  • Four years of experience in sports information, communications, marketing, or public relations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in a related field.
  • Experience in sports marketing.
  • Experience serving as the primary or secondary communications contact for football.

Skills

Knowledge

  • Communications, journalism, web, and news and feature writing.
  • Print, broadcast, and web communication principles and strategies, including streaming of live events.
  • Sports and athletic programs, including basic sports statistical applications.
  • Marketing, advertising, public relations, and promotional principles and strategies.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite applications, including Photoshop, InDesign, After Effects, and Premiere Pro.
  • Interpersonal, oral, and written communication.

Abilities

  • Promote ASU athletics through multiple media, marketing, advertising, public relations, and promotional strategies.
  • Work effectively with a wide variety of individuals, including media representatives, coaches, faculty, student-athletes, and others.
  • Manage media staff and activities in compliance with university policies, procedures, and practices.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting and intermittent standing, walking, reaching, bending, and grasping.
  • Basic manual dexterity and good hand-eye coordination.
  • Work both indoors and outdoors with periodic exposure to dust, pollen, heat, cold, and inclement weather.
