Assistant/Associate Professor of Small Animal Internal Medicine – Clinician Educator (CE)

About the role

The University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Clinical Sciences and Advanced Medicine, invites applications for a faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in Small Animal Internal Medicine in the Clinician Educator (CE) track.

The successful candidate is expected to have a history of or potential as an exemplary clinician educator, researcher, and academic leader in their field, with demonstrated excellence in clinical service and teaching, as well as a record of or potential to develop a scholarly research program that advances the field. The CE faculty member is expected to contribute to their field through scholarship that brings new knowledge and advances their field.

Sixty (60%) of the candidate’s time will be dedicated to clinical service and teaching in the Matthew J. Ryan Veterinary Hospital. Time outside of clinical service is used for scholarly activity, professional development, citizenship to the Department, and didactic teaching.

This position is part of the School’s Standing Faculty. It is a non-tenured position, with reappointment every three years and promotion required by year nine.

Responsibilities

• Provide patient care and supervision of day-to-day operations of the Internal Medicine service.
• Teach small group and didactic instruction of veterinary students rotating through the service and mentor internal medicine residents.
• Participate in classroom and laboratory teaching.
• Develop a scholarly research program that advances the field of internal medicine.

Qualifications

• Veterinary degree.
• Diplomate of the American or European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Specialty of Small Animal Internal Medicine, or successful completion of an internal medicine residency program at an accredited university. Board-certification must be achieved within 24 months of employment.

The hospital is a dynamic and intellectually stimulating environment with excellent nursing staff, interns, and residents. The Section of Medicine employs eight board-certified internists (7 ACVIM-Small Animal Internal Medicine, 1 ECVIM-Small Animal Internal Medicine) and supports 12 residents in the residency-training program. More than 30 Diplomates of various American and European certifying Colleges directly support the Internal Medicine program.

Opportunities for collaborative research and clinical endeavors are abundant within the Veterinary School as well as with the nearby School of Medicine. The Department offers junior rank faculty mentoring through a specifically appointed mentoring committee and competitive internal funding for pilot research projects.
