About the role

The Gene and Linda Voiland School of Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering (VSCEB) at Washington State University (WSU) invites applications for permanent, 9-month, tenure-track faculty positions at the Assistant and/or Associate Professor level. These positions will be located at the WSU Pullman campus, with an expected start date of August 16, 2027.

The VSCEB is recruiting for multiple tenure-track faculty positions. Appointments will be made based on candidates' qualifications. The successful candidate is expected to establish a dynamic, externally funded, nationally recognized research program, teach core and elective undergraduate and graduate courses in chemical engineering, mentor students, perform professional service, and publish scholarly work.

VSCEB seeks outstanding candidates working in heterogeneous, homogeneous, or bioinspired catalysis with a strong component in artificial intelligence (AI)-driven automation laboratories and data science to address challenges in energy, environment, and bioeconomy. Preference will be given to candidates whose research strengthens existing programs such as heterogeneous catalysis, electrocatalysis, computational catalysis, plastic upcycling, and carbon-negative H₂ production. Successful candidates are expected to build collaborations within the Voiland School, with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, other WSU departments, and national/international partners.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain a nationally recognized, externally funded research program.
  • Teach core and elective undergraduate and graduate courses in chemical engineering.
  • Mentor a diverse group of students.
  • Perform professional service and publish scholarly work.
  • Collaborate with faculty within VSCEB, other WSU departments, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and external partners.

Requirements

For All Candidate Ranks

  • B.S. in chemical engineering prior to the start of the appointment.
  • Ph.D. in chemical engineering or a related engineering degree prior to the start of the appointment.
  • Ability to teach core chemical engineering classes.
  • Commitment to service and collaboration with internal and external groups.
  • Demonstrated record of scholarly work.

For Assistant Professor

  • Potential to establish a strong, nationally recognized AI/data science-directed research program with extramural funding that complements and enhances existing programs within the school and WSU.

For Associate Professor

  • Demonstrated strong record of extramurally funded and AI/data science-directed research that complements and enhances existing programs within the school and WSU.
  • Established national reputation for research excellence.

Preferred Qualifications

For Assistant Professor

  • Experience serving as a teaching assistant in Chemical Engineering courses.
  • Research that combines AI-driven automation laboratories and/or data science with experimental work.

For Associate Professor

  • Experience serving as an instructor for Chemical Engineering courses.
  • Research that combines AI-driven automation laboratories and/or data science with experimental work.

Pay

  • Assistant Professor: $110,000 - $120,000 (9-month academic salary).
  • Associate Professor: $120,000 - $135,000 (9-month academic salary).

Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.
