Assistant, Associate, or Full Clinical Professor of Law (tenure-track or non-tenure-track), Director of the Immigration Clinic

The University of Mississippi School of Law invites applicants to establish and direct an Immigration Clinic. The Clinic’s mission is to train students to protect the rights of both local and state-wide immigrant communities and to engage in public service lawyering in the immigration policy field.

About the role

The Director’s status may be tenure-track or long-term contract, determined collaboratively by the Director and the Law School Dean based on the Director’s preferences, the Clinic’s needs, and the Law School’s administrative and pedagogical requirements. The position is a twelve-month appointment.

The Director’s primary responsibilities include managing caseload, selecting cases, litigating cases, supervising students, and administering all aspects of the Clinic, including managing the Clinic budget and supervising Clinic staff. The successful candidate will achieve excellence in some or all of the following, depending on the scope of contractual employment: scholarship, teaching, public advocacy, and service to the Law School and community.

Responsibilities

• Represent immigrants in removal proceedings, immigration-related complex federal litigation, and asylum cases
• Contribute to immigration policy and community education projects
• Partner with local, regional, and national civil rights and immigration-focused organizations
• Manage caseload, select cases, and litigate cases
• Supervise law students and Clinic staff
• Administer the Clinic, including budget management
• Engage in scholarship, teaching, public advocacy, and service (for tenure-track candidates)

Requirements

• Minimum of five years of legal experience, including litigation in immigration law
• Staff management experience, junior attorney mentorship experience, or equivalent
• J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school or international equivalent
• Admission to the Mississippi Bar, eligibility for reciprocity, or willingness to take the Mississippi Bar Examination at the earliest opportunity
• Demonstrated promise as a teacher and commitment to clinical teaching and public interest law practice
• For tenure-track candidates: a record of scholarship or evidence of promise to produce scholarship consistent with clinical teaching and litigation demands
