Asphalt Screed Operator (Screw-Man)

This position is critical to final pavement quality and requires precision, teamwork, and accountability. The Screed Operator is also responsible for maintaining screed components and supporting overall crew performance.

Responsibilities

• Operate and control the screed to maintain specified mat thickness, grade, and slope
• Adjust screed extensions, crown, and angle of attack in response to paving conditions
• Monitor asphalt flow across the screed and correct segregation or uneven distribution
• Check grade and surface smoothness using hand tools and visual alignment
• Assist with head-of-mat adjustments, joints, and transitions
• Perform daily inspections, cleaning, and routine maintenance of screed components
• Coordinate closely with the paver operator, roller operators, and foreman to maintain quality and pace
• Follow all safety policies and job-site regulations

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 pounds
• Ability to work extended hours, including overtime when required
• Construction job sites with exposure to moving equipment, traffic, dust, noise, and hot asphalt materials
• Frequent travel between project locations may be required
• Overtime and weekend work may be necessary during peak construction seasons
