About the role

This full-time position is part of the City of Portland’s 24-hour response team and may require after-hours, evening, weekend, and holiday emergency response. A work skill demonstration test is required for this recruitment.

Responsibilities

  • Set up jobs with proper traffic safety control devices
  • Dump asphalt and rake to grade
  • Compact hot mix using a vibraplate
  • Complete activity reports for each job as it is finished
  • Assist and work with Crew Lead to determine mix needed to complete job and orders from vendor
  • Determine proper screed adjustment on spreader when paving streets
  • Prepare and pave potholes, utility cuts, overlays, base repair, and cold milling projects
  • Spread tack coat
  • Utilize strong communication techniques to answer questions from the public
  • During emergencies and the non-paving season, perform various duties as required, typically described in the job duties section of the Utility Worker class specifications
  • Drive City vehicles as needed

Qualifications

  • Experience utilizing asphalt raking tools and equipment
  • Experience raking hot mix
  • Ability to accurately judge the amount of hot mix needed for a project and rake to required grade prior to rolling or compacting
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical computations to determine area and volume
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for long periods of time
  • Valid state driver’s license and acceptable driving record at the time of hire
  • Possess or obtain a Class “A” CDL within 9 months from date of hire (in-house training available on Saturdays)

Work environment

Work is typically performed in a field environment. Incumbent is typically required to negotiate rough terrain; lift heavy objects; work outdoors in all weather conditions; may be called back to work during emergencies; work in and around traffic, work site equipment or machinery; work at heights or in confined spaces; exposed to hazardous materials; wear protective gear.

Wage information

  • Entry: $32.13 per hour
  • After six months: $33.34 per hour
  • After 1 year: $37.30 per hour
  • After 2 years: $38.66 per hour
