About the role
An Asphalt Plant Mechanic with welding experience is an hourly-rated skilled craft position that performs a wide variety of tasks on construction projects, transferring from one task to another as the workflow dictates.
Responsibilities
- Perform all duties and responsibilities with Solterra's Core Values at the forefront.
- Apply strong working knowledge of asphalt plant operation and electrical systems.
- Read and comprehend repair manuals in their entirety.
- Analyze malfunctions and execute repairs.
- Operate and inspect plant equipment to diagnose defects.
- Dismantle and reassemble plant equipment using hoists and hand tools.
- Weld broken parts and structural members.
- Serve as a safety ambassador by complying with federal, state, and local laws, as well as Company safety policy; foster a safety culture and proactively identify and remedy job-site hazards.
- Examine parts for damage and/or excessive wear.
- Test overhauled equipment to ensure operating efficiency.
- Direct and guide team members engaged in cleaning parts, assembling, and disassembling asphalt plant belts and parts.
- Perform incidental work items and duties included within other crafts.
- Complete any and all other duties assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Three to five years or more of industry-related experience, with an emphasis on Asphalt Plant Operations.
- Must understand work directions and communicate effectively with job site supervisors and fellow employees.
- Demonstrable previous experience as an Asphalt Plant Mechanic; this is not an entry-level position.
- Must be fluent in English (speak, read, and write).
- Valid driver’s license with a clean motor-vehicle record; CDL preferred and may be required for some departments.
- Passing a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and background check is required.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Constant physical effort, including standing, during a regular work shift of at least eight hours per day.
- Must be able to stand for extended periods, stoop, bend, and crouch as required.
- Work is often performed at heights up to 60 feet, requiring climbing ladders, scaffolds, and stair towers with narrow steps and passageways.
- Frequently work with hands extended overhead, sometimes while operating hand power tools.
- Ability to lift and carry, on a frequent basis, at least 50 pounds personally and up to 150 pounds with assistance.
- Manual dexterity to hand-carry generators, lumber, and other construction materials, forms, power tools, and hand tools.
- Capable of operating concrete vibrators for extended periods.
- Physical dexterity to pour, grade, and finish concrete, involving stretching, proper leg placement, and repetitive arm and hand motions.
- Maintain constant alertness to multiple concurrent activities on the construction site, including employee/contractor activities, stationary and mobile equipment operation.
- Frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions.
- Capable of being certified to enter confined spaces, including climbing into and out of excavations up to 15 feet deep using ladders or crawling.
- Capable of safely and productively operating a man-lift.
- Ability to maintain balance while working on plant surfaces or other uneven surfaces.
- Required to work on project sites and operate vehicles, trailers, machinery, equipment, and tools within local, state, and federal safety guidelines.
- Will be required to work outside, frequently for long periods, in all weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
- Potential exposure to various chemicals, vapors, pollutants, airborne pathogens, gases, uneven surfaces, loud noises, moving vehicles/machines, and dust/debris.
