Asphalt Paving Raker

About the Role

Paving/asphalt shovelers perform physical labor tasks including raking, sweeping, and lining out the road, as well as working alongside the tractor, mill, paver, and screed. Shovelers assist the crew in ensuring the asphalt mat has the proper consistency, material, and final result that the customer desires.

Responsibilities

• Use tools and equipment safely and efficiently, such as shovel, rake, and other small tools.
• Assist in the placement, moving, and dismantling of signs, barricades, cones, and other traffic control devices.
• Partner with crew members to apply asphalt per plan specifications and perform tasks as instructed by the crew foreman to meet daily schedules/estimates.
• Enforce proper safety and traffic precautions while ensuring the quality of the finished product.
• Understand and execute paving procedures to meet project specifications.
• Smooth and adjust surface irregularities, restore surface finish, and spread asphalt to proper grade before compaction.
• Use shovels and lutes to distribute asphalt mixtures over surfaces.
• Match and finish freshly made asphalt paving joints evenly.
• Finish surfaces by smoothing and tamping asphalt material to the proper grade and thickness.
• Work as part of the paving crew, primarily raking asphalt, shoveling excess asphalt, and sweeping up debris.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

• Perform motions such as stretching, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, twisting, throwing, walking, standing, reaching, and squatting.
• Operate equipment under temperature extremes for extended hours.
• Work in a variety of weather conditions, including exposure to vehicular traffic.
• Lift up to 50 pounds.

• Maintain a positive professional attitude with co-workers, customers, and the public.
• Flexibility with last-minute schedule changes, location changes, and shift changes.
• Overtime work may be required.
• Comply with OSHA, DOT, and all applicable local, municipal, state, and federal laws.
• For driving positions, applicants must be at least 25 years old to meet insurance underwriting requirements.
• Willingness to submit to a background check and pre-placement drug analysis.

Preferred Qualifications

• Specific job-related experience is preferred but not required.
• A valid driver’s license and/or reliable transportation.
• Spanish proficiency is a plus but not required.

Pay

$25.00+ per hour, depending on experience.
