ASL Interpreter (On-Site & Remote)
Roles and Responsibilities
Provide accurate and culturally competent ASL interpretation in educational settings
Support a variety of assignments, including:
Classroom instruction
IEP meetings and administrative sessions
Staff trainings and large group settings
School events and extracurricular activities
Arrive on-site at least 30 minutes prior to scheduled assignments
Maintain professionalism and adhere to the RID Code of Professional Conduct
Collaborate with other interpreters in team interpreting environments when required
Accept or decline assignments within required response timelines
Maintain communication with VECRA scheduling and program management staff
Qualifications and Required Skills
- Candidates may be placed based on experience
- Tier 1: Certified interpreters (RID/NAD) with 3+ years experience, IEP meetings, leadership, and high-level assignments
- Tier 2: Group settings (trainings, assemblies)
- Tier 3: General school activities and events
- Minimum Qualifications:
- Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL)
- Knowledge of Deaf culture and communication best practices
- Ability to work in educational environments
- Strong professionalism, reliability, and communication skills
- Preferred Qualifications:
- RID or NAD certification
- Experience interpreting in K–12 or educational settings
- Experience with IEP meetings or specialized assignments
- Willingness to travel within a 50-mile radius
- Availability for recurring or long-term assignments
Work Environment
- On-site school settings (primary)
- Occasional virtual assignments (Zoom/Teams)
- Collaborative, team-based interpreting environments
Additional Information
- This is a contract/on-call position based on assignment availability
- Work is scheduled based on client needs and interpreter availability
- Interpreters may be selected for ongoing or recurring assignments
