ASL Interpreter

Under the direct supervision of the supervisor, the incumbent serves as a healthcare interpreter and supports all aspects of the department operations to ensure effective communication between Deaf, Blind, and Hard of Hearing (DBHOH) patients, their families/companions, and providers.

Responsibilities

• Performs consecutive and simultaneous healthcare interpretations, including American Sign Language (ASL) as voice-to-sign and sign-to-voice, and sight/document translations between English and ASL speakers.
• Provides quality interpretation services consistent with departmental and hospital standards/philosophy.
• Serves as a cultural and linguistic resource to physicians, staff, and patients to contribute to successful outcomes.
• Adheres to National Standards of Practice, competency standards, HIPAA regulations, and the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) code of conduct (for ASL interpreters).
• Maintains strict standards of confidentiality.
• Trains new employees in healthcare interpretation, HIPAA, interpreter’s code of ethics, cultural competence, and assigned department functions.
• Completes required training, continuing education credits, and maintains annual qualification requirements for healthcare interpreting.
• Assesses, evaluates, facilitates requisitions, and documents interactions with deaf patients in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
• Provides and coordinates interpreter services for deaf patients throughout the health system with minimal direction.
• Supports office operations by answering phones, taking requests, confirming appointments, documenting encounters, data entry, scheduling, troubleshooting, filing, photocopying, correspondence, billing, and maintaining databases.
• Assists in special projects, committee participation, and planning/coordination of Clinical Language program events.
• Develops and maintains professional skills by attending conferences or workshops related to healthcare interpreting and earning required CEUs.
• Trains and supervises external contracted interpreters, coordinating assignments and ensuring adherence to protocols for documentation, patient privacy, and unit rules.

Requirements

• Associate's Degree or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
• 3–5 years of experience as a qualified sign language interpreter.
• One of the following certifications required upon hire:
  • Board for Evaluation of Interpreters I (BEI) – State of Michigan
  • Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Certification
  • National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Certification
  • National Interpreter Certification (NIC) – RID

Qualifications

• Near-native or native fluency in ASL.
• Work experience in a medical/healthcare interpreting setting (preferred).
• Bachelor’s Degree (preferred).
