Pay

Salary range: $27.85 - $33.82 per hour, based on education, experience, and certification. Wages outlined in the Interpreters Contract located on the district website.

About the role

The Interpreter provides interpreting and transliterating services for students, staff, and parents who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing in various environments. The primary function is to act as a facilitator of communication between the Deaf/Hard of Hearing student and their educational community, enabling active participation in the educational program. The Educational Interpreter serves as a related service provider on a student's educational team.

Responsibilities

  • Provide meaningful classroom communication for Deaf/Hard of Hearing students in integrated and other necessary settings.
  • Simultaneously interpret spoken language into finger spelling and sign language, and vice versa.
  • Use ASL and/or Signed English based on the student's mode of communication.
  • Prepare for interpreting assignments by reading and researching class materials.
  • Interpret for other classes (day and evening) and various situations where interpreting assistance is needed (e.g., extracurricular activities).
  • Prepare vocabulary booklets by transferring written language into signs to reinforce signing skills for teachers, parents, and students.
  • Establish and maintain open communication with mainstream and Deaf/Hard of Hearing staff.
  • Provide information to classroom teachers about the interpreter's role in the classroom.
  • Assist in meeting the student's educational needs by:
    • Evaluating the physical classroom setting to ensure optimal communication for the student.
    • Using the student's preferred mode of communication (e.g., ASL, Signed English, Pidgin English, or a combination).
    • Assessing the student's language and skill level to ensure appropriate communication techniques.
    • Checking for understanding of signs, new vocabulary, and concepts.
    • Securing a note taker if one is not available.
    • Encouraging student participation in class.
    • Developing a good rapport with the student without infringing on their rights.
    • Assisting in the implementation of the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP), including academic support, behavior management, activities of daily living, and/or transition support as directed.
  • Work in partnership with Deaf/Hard of Hearing staff by:
    • Serving as a collaborative member of the student's educational team and providing information to help evaluate and plan the student's educational program.
    • Making appropriate personnel aware of classroom needs that may affect the student's success.
    • Providing teachers with information from the mainstream class related to discussions, assignments, student behavior, and tests.
    • Assisting in developing new signs for technical and academic areas to help students learn new concepts.
    • Providing tutoring in specific subjects when needed.
    • Sharing materials/handouts distributed in the mainstream class with teachers.
    • Promoting Deaf/Hard of Hearing awareness in the classroom and throughout the school.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of an Interpreter/Transliterator Training Program affiliated with an accredited educational institution.
  • Current, national interpreter and transliterator certification or a two-year provisional certificate with certification attained prior to expiration.
