About the role

The City of Battle Creek seeks an individual to perform basic semiskilled work carrying out a variety of mechanical repair tasks such as inspecting, lubricating, repairing, and rebuilding all types of automotive equipment and machinery, and related work as apparent or assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Performs preventative maintenance and repairs on small engines, cars, trucks, buses and other automotive and power-driven equipment.
  • Dismantles, adjusts, overhauls, services, troubleshoots and sings electrical systems, machinery, engines, fuel systems, carburetors, distributors, generators, voltage regulators, and other equipment as necessary.
  • Completes builds for new equipment.
  • Fabricates and repairs small items for other departments as necessary.
  • Serves and repairs the electrical systems of automotive and/or power-driven equipment.
  • Repairs mechanical compressors and pumps.
  • Performs minor welding and cutting activities.
  • Prepares records, reports and analyzing written or computer data.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • 1-3 years’ experience repairing and overhauling a variety of automotive and other power-drive equipment
  • Possess ASE Certifications A1-A6 or T2-T6 upon hire
  • Valid Class "A" Commercial driver’s license within 3 months of hire
  • Basic tools as required to work on equipment
  • Valid driver's license in the State of Michigan

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

  • Frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force
  • Occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force
  • Work regularly requires standing, sitting, bending, reaching, hand dexterity (grasping, holding, keyboarding, repetitive movements)
  • Reading, writing, eye-hand coordination, seeing (near and/or far, color, depth, field of vision), hearing, using the telephone, contact with government officials and the general public, working overtime, and working inside and alone
  • Work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts and exposure to fumes or airborne particles, frequently requires exposure to wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working in high, precarious places, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to the risk of electrical shock and wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus
  • Work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic)

Qualifications

  • Do you have a High School diploma or GED equivalent?
  • Do you have a valid driver's license in the State of Michigan?
  • Do you possess basic tools to work on equipment?
  • Do you have at least 1 - 3 years' experience repairing and overhauling a variety of automotive and other power-drive equipment?
  • This position requires obtaining a valid Class "A" Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within three months of hire. The City will provide the necessary training. Are you able and willing to meet this requirement?
  • Do you possess ASE Certifications A1-A6 or T2-T6?
