About the Role

Responsible for the development and execution of all Safety strategic goals and offers safety-related budgetary guidance for the Area (Market Areas of $400 Million or less in revenue) in accordance with WM Safety Services guidance.

Responsibilities

  • Corporate/Market Area Safety Strategy: Works closely with Corporate and Market Area Senior Leadership Teams to understand, support, and align safety strategy, goals, and objectives at both the Corporate and Market Area levels.
  • Drive Cam System Management: Oversees, manages, and consults with Market Area and Site leaders on Drive Cam System Management, including analysis, reporting, coaching, interventions, and ride-alongs with site managers and front-line drivers.
  • Serious Injury and Fatality (SIF) Prevention Program Management: Identifies, reduces, and eliminates tasks that present a high risk for serious injury or fatality. Applies SIF logic to identify job tasks, activities, and situations with high SIF risk and conducts Protection Validation Studies to close protection gaps.
  • Safety Communications: Works closely with the EH&S team to ensure appropriate dissemination and implementation of EH&S policies, corporate safety communications, and initiatives. Assesses risks, monitors safety trends, and deploys safety awareness messaging.
  • Incident Management: Determines severity and initiates formal investigations as necessary. Ensures incident data is captured in the WM EH&S portal, creates reports on incident analyses, and works with the Third Party Risk Administrator to document required information. Performs Root Cause Analysis and collaborates with the People Team as needed.
  • District Specific Safety Plan: Analyzes incident trends and works with Market Area and Site Leadership to ensure the DSSP is operational.
  • Hazardous Energy Control Program: Oversees the WM Hazardous Energy Control Program, directs, trains, and coaches others to ensure HECP protocols are followed.
  • Regulation Management: Knowledgeable of Federal, State/Provincial DOT/OSHA regulations. Works with internal and external Subject Matter Experts to ensure WM adheres to all required standards and regulations.
  • WM / Customer Facilities Compliance Management: Oversees site/safety management systems (e.g., fire protection, alarms, CNG systems). Conducts reviews of new equipment installs, ensures inclement weather and natural disaster preparedness plans are in place, and performs Safety Audits/Inspections. Assists with commercial insurance management issues.
  • Safety Recognition Program Management: Establishes performance criteria and feedback mechanisms for effectiveness evaluation.
  • Employee Health Management: Works with Corporate Subject Matter Experts to ensure sites follow the Medical Monitoring Program and adhere to the WM Industrial Hygiene Program.
  • Personal Protective Equipment Management: Serves as the Subject Matter Expert on WM PPE policies and procurement for the Market Area. Works with corporate supply chain to ensure appropriate PPE supply.
  • People Development (Safety Specific): Constructively develops and coaches others on risk management and safety topics. Provides developmental opportunities based on incident investigations, DriveCam events, and observations.
  • Employee Observations: Coaches and trains Market Area Safety Specialists and leaders on safety trends from the EH&S Portal, DriveCam, and SIF data to conduct effective employee observations and coaching conversations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree (accredited), or
  • High School Diploma (accredited) and four (4) years of relevant work experience, or
  • In lieu of degree, 5 to 7 years in Safety or Operations Management (in addition to education requirements).

  • Administrative Services: Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
  • Health Services: Certified Industrial Hygienist
  • Engineering - General: Professional Engineer (PE) License
  • Qualified Environmental Professional (QEP)
  • Registered Environmental Manager (REM)
  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)

Pay

The expected base pay range for this on-site position is $101,000 - $145,000. The specific salary offered may be influenced by factors including the candidate’s relevant experience, education, training, certifications, qualifications, and work location.
