Area Engineer - Lufkin Area Office

About the role

The Lufkin District is hiring an Area Engineer to oversee construction and maintenance operations across several of the nine counties served by the district. This leadership role offers the opportunity to manage impactful transportation projects, lead high-performing teams, and help keep Texas moving safely and efficiently.

Responsibilities

• Overseeing construction operations in the area office to include review of shop drawings, compliance with regulations, approval of letting advertising and conducting pre-construction meetings and public hearings
• Overseeing Design Section operations in the area office
• Overseeing inspection of construction projects and temporary traffic control
• Overseeing maintenance sections to include planning and budgeting work with maintenance supervisors and district staff, right-of-way plan preparation and monitors acquisition processes to coordinate project letting, utility relocation/adjustment inspection and responsible for material testing and construction engineering
• Approving and inspecting driveway, utility and drainage fill permits, and monitors removal of illegal signs
• Approving project candidate submission for program calls
• Directing administrative and business operation activities including human resources, training programs, inventory oversight, safety and preparation and monitoring of budgets
• Developing work programs to meet transportation needs within the assigned geographical area
• Overseeing, coordinating and monitoring contractors' compliance with plans and specifications; authorizing payment of estimates; resolving differences, disputes and claims; planning preparation and approval of expenditures
• Overseeing, planning and executing emergency procedures, preparedness and response for a geographic area; responding to office/incident location to direct/oversee activities for emergency situations/conditions
• Providing direction for construction projects and contract change negotiations
• Representing the Department to the public; answering inquiries from governmental officials, making media presentations, speaking at public functions and participating in other civic endeavors
• Reviewing, recommending and approving change orders

Qualifications

• Education: Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS
• Experience: 5 years transportation engineering
• Licenses and Certifications: Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Licensed Prof Engineer
