Who We Are
At the center of the Montrose district sits Hotel Saint Augustine, located across from the Menil Collection campus near the Menil Drawing Institute. It is home to 71 hotel rooms and suites, a restaurant, a small event space, an intimate lobby bar and a cloistered circular courtyard pool. The property takes inspiration from the spirit of the museum collection and of Houston itself—a duality of old world and new, a rich diversity and a forward-thinking sensibility.
Located in the charming Houston Heights neighborhood, Hotel Daphne is the latest project from Austin's acclaimed hospitality group Bunkhouse Hotels. With 49 rooms, it's an inviting escape in a residential neighborhood on the rise. Hotel Daphne features an all-day restaurant and bar, a library/small private events space, and a lobby retail shop signature to the Bunkhouse brand.
The Role
The Area Director of Engineering is responsible for all administrative, financial, and operational aspects of the hotel's engineering division, ensuring the property is maintained safely and operated profitably. This highly visible leadership role works closely with the hotel's senior and corporate leadership teams, while also communicating with ownership regarding capital expenditure projects. The position reports directly to the General Manager and plays a key role in supporting the overall success of the hotel.
Key Responsibilities
- Consistently offer professional, friendly and engaging service
- Maintain positive communication with other departments at all times and when issues arise keep appropriate teams informed of progress
- Lead and manage the day-to-day activities of the Maintenance department and ensure all standards are followed at both departments
- Supervise and train all Engineering staff in Customer Service, Empowerment, Standard Operating Procedures and Loss Prevention Standards
- Create, approve and post all Engineering staff schedules according to Hotel standards
- Oversee ongoing maintenance, repair and preventative maintenance in the hotel with a focus to improve efficiency, profitability and service levels
- Co-ordinate renovation and capital projects, managing outside contractors as required
- Prepare and manage the annual maintenance budget, monitor the Budget on a monthly basis; complete P&L responsibility for the department and assist in the preparation of the capital plan
- Establish and fine tune a complete preventive maintenance program for Guest Rooms and equipment. Incorporation of the program into a facilities management software package, which tracks the work order system and scheduled maintenance needs
- Follow purchasing procedures for all inventory needs and maintain the required physical inventory pursuant to the maintenance program and unanticipated emergencies
- Ensure the hotel is in compliance with all government regulations pertaining to building code requirements, health, fire and life safety programs
- Review ongoing service contracts ensuring superior performance and competitive pricing
- Monitoring energy and water management programs to ensure cost effective use of utilities
- Actively participate in energy conservation and safety programs
- Balance operational, administrative and Guest needs
- Follow departmental policies and procedures
- Ensure compliance with the Americans Disabilities Act (ADA)
- Follow all safety policies
Qualifications
- At least 5 years of progressive facilities management experience in a hotel
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Stationary Engineer's license preferred
- HVAC, electrical, plumbing, boiler operations and general maintenance skills required
- Heavy work - Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and /or 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects
- Travel related to company business sometimes required
- Maintain a warm and friendly demeanor at all times
- Must be able to effectively communicate both verbally and written, with all level of employees and guests in an attentive, friendly, courteous and service oriented manner
- Must be effective at listening to, understanding, and clarifying concerns raised by employees and guests
- Must be able to multitask and prioritize departmental functions to meet deadlines
- Approach all encounters with guests and employees in an attentive, friendly, courteous and service-oriented manner
- Maintain regular attendance in compliance with Hyatt Hotel Standards, as required by scheduling, which will vary according to the needs of the hotel
- Comply with Hotel Standards and regulations to encourage safe and efficient hotel operations
- Maximize efforts towards productivity, identify problem areas and assist in implementing solutions
- Must be effective in handling problems, including anticipating, preventing, identifying and solving problems as necessary
- Must be able to understand and evaluate complex information, data, etc. from various sources to meet appropriate objectives
- Must be able to maintain confidentiality of information
- Flexible availability: weekends and nights may be asked when projects or repairs require the DOE to be present
