Reports to: Campus Principal/Director of Special Education

About the role

Responsible for facilitating Annual, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) meetings and completion of required ARD paperwork. Monitor implementation of individualized education plans (IEP) and facilitate communication with parents and staff.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Knowledge of state and federal laws for educating students with disabilities
  • Understanding of the individual needs of students with disabilities
  • Ability to communicate effectively with parents and staff
  • Ability to implement policies and procedures
  • Ability to interpret data
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Responsibilities

Program Management

  • Schedules or assists in scheduling ARD meetings and helps establish an agenda, time allotment, and guidelines for the meeting.
  • Facilitates ARD committee discussions using techniques to help members communicate and collaborate effectively.
  • Ensures each committee member has an opportunity to participate, resolves disagreements, and keeps the committee on task.
  • Ensures federal and state timelines are met for ARD committee meetings.
  • Implements and maintains systematic communication between special and general education personnel regarding ARD meetings, IEPs, student accommodations, and instructional concerns.
  • Supports student achievement by ensuring delivery of special education curriculum and instruction according to individual IEPs.
  • Ensures student progress is evaluated regularly and findings are used to improve program effectiveness.
  • Offers and implements changes when warranted.
  • Collaborates with teachers to address student achievement deficiencies, focusing resources and materials to promote satisfactory classroom performance.
  • Encourages and supports the development of innovative instructional programs.
  • Assists in monitoring the instructional process to ensure alignment with desired outcomes and IEPs.

Instructional Support

  • Supports the district's student management policies and expectations for student behaviors related to the special education program.
  • Uses coaching skills to support staff, build capacity, and provide technical assistance.
  • Provides orientation to new staff on procedures for effective implementation of the campus ARD process.

Communication and Community Relations

  • Establishes and maintains positive relationships with principals, teachers, staff, and parents by supporting innovation in educating students with disabilities.
  • Serves as parent liaison in matters pertaining to student assessment, program eligibility, and IEPs.
  • Articulates the district's mission and goals in special education and solicits support in realizing the mission.

Policy, Reports, and Law

  • Compiles, maintains, and files all reports, records, and other documents as required.
  • Complies with policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rule, and local board policy in special education.
  • Makes recommendations to improve program effectiveness.

Other

  • Follows district safety protocols and emergency procedures.

Working Conditions

Physical Demands

  • Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment
  • Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting
  • Motion: Frequent walking
  • Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may lift and move textbooks and classroom equipment

Environmental Factors

  • Work inside, may work outside; regular exposure to noise
  • Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours

Benefits

  • The District contributes $330 monthly toward the cost of the employee-only health insurance, which is $105 more than the state-required amount of $225/month.
