Duties
- Assist with the arrangement, description, preservation, cataloging and access to NMAI's archival collections.
- Track, rehouse and store archival collections; monitor storage conditions; conduct inventories, surveys, and reorganize collections materials.
- Apply basic preservation methods to archival materials, such as removing damaging residues, rehousing documents, and maintaining a list of fragile materials requiring preservation treatment and digitization.
- Create well-written and concise finding aids and collection-level records in Archivists’ Toolkit system according to archival descriptive standards like DACS.
- Prepare small purchase orders for supplies and services from outside vendors.
- Support administrative tasks, including arranging travel for staff and contracted consultants, making hotel reservations, and preparing travel authorizations and vouchers.
- Provide reference and research services to the public, Native American communities, researchers, and Smithsonian staff, both onsite and remotely.
- Aid on-site researchers in the Archive Center reading room by identifying appropriate collections, pulling items, assisting in their use, and refiling them.
- Answer staff and public inquiries by researching archival holdings and responding in a detailed manner via email, phone, or letter.
Requirements
