About the role

The role involves plans, directs, advises on and reviews the work of subordinate professional and nonprofessional personnel engaged in architectural design projects. It includes determining work priorities, making broad work assignments, analyzing and reviewing the work of subordinates, coordinating activities, serving as a technical consultant, and preparing or directing the preparation of technical reports and correspondence.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, directs, advises on and reviews the work of subordinate professional and nonprofessional personnel engaged in architectural design projects.
  • Determines work priorities, and makes broad work assignments.
  • Analyzes and reviews the work of subordinates in terms of technical, functional and aesthetic adequacy, and for conformance to departmental policies, regulations, and legal requirements.
  • Captures and coordinates activities of its section with other sections or departments, other government agencies, private contractors or consultants, and the public.
  • Assists in the development of broad work programs and policies and in preparing and justifying budgets.
  • Makes recommendations and commitments concerning such matters as design changes to meet special conditions or functions, and need for hiring special consultants for mechanical, electrical, or structural engineering problems, subsurface investigation, and surveying.
  • Recommends organizational and functional changes, and performs such personnel management functions as approving leave, initiating requests for personnel action, evaluating employee performance, and handling disciplinary problems.
  • Serves as a technical consultant on architectural matters.
  • Prepares or directs the preparation of technical reports and correspondence.

Requirements

  • Education Requirement: Graduation from an accredited school or college of architecture or engineering, with a degree in architecture or architectural engineering.
  • Four (4) years of successful and progressive experience in architecture which will enable the applicant to perform successfully at the professional level may be substituted for graduation from college provided this experience demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional architecture and an understanding of the field of architecture comparable to that which would be acquired through successful completion of a full four-year course leading to a bachelor’s degree in an accredited college or university with a major study in architecture.
  • Experience Requirements: Applicants must have had progressively responsible experience of the kind and quality described below and in the amounts shown in the following table:

    • Administrative Experience: **Applicants for the Architect VI level must demonstrate possession of administrative aptitude. This requirement will be considered to have been met when there is strong affirmative evidence of the necessary administrative abilities.
    • Architectural Experience: Professional architectural work experience in developing and preparing complete designs, drawings, specifications, estimates of buildings, structure, and installations.
    • Non-qualifying Architectural Experience: The following kinds of experience are not acceptable as professional architectural experience.

Qualifications

  • Professional License Requirement: For the Architect IV and higher levels, applicant must possess a Hawaii State Certificate of Registration as professional architect.
  • Driver’s License: For some positions, applicants may be required to have a valid Hawaii State driver’s license.
