Responsibilities

• Design, initiate, administer, and participate in cultural resource surveys and excavations.
• Consult with the Washington State Historic Preservation Officer, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, Tribes, and the Department of Interior regarding the direction of the program.
• Prepare and/or review documentation on properties for nomination to the National Register of Historical Places.
• Provide archeological expertise in locating, inventorying, evaluating, and protecting historic properties.
• Maintain records of compliance efforts including general information and specific information for each project.
• Conduct field investigations to collect archeological and cultural environmental data to locate or preserve historical locations.
• Analyze fieldwork data or generate reports to assess environmental compliance for large areas such as a military base.
• Assist Archeologist in assessing proposed projects or permits to ensure compliance with environmental or archeological laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Requirements

Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. A Tier 1, Non-sensitive, Low Risk background is required throughout the appointment.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Basic Requirement:

• Bachelor's degree (or higher) that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas:
  • History of archeology
  • Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa
  • Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area
  • Theory and methods of archeology (methods include typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques)
  • Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work
• Six semester hours of related course work in geography, geology, or cultural geography; history, historiography, or historical archeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or surveying.
• OR a bachelor's degree (or higher) in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements above (including archeological field school).
• OR a combination of education and experience: college-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to the requirements above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education.
• OR four years of archeological work experience demonstrating thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology, including field experience in survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes:

• Conducting field investigations to collect archeological and cultural environmental data to locate or preserve historical locations.
• Analyzing fieldwork data or generating reports to assess environmental compliance for large areas such as a military base.
• Assisting Archeologists in assessing proposed projects or permits to ensure compliance with environmental or archeological laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-9).

OR successfully completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in a relevant field (e.g., Archeology).

OR a combination of specialized experience (less than one year) and graduate education (at least two years) that meets 100% of the requirements.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-9).

Foreign Education: If using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization specializing in interpretation of foreign education programs and deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program.
