About the Role

This position involves designing, initiating, administering, and participating in cultural resource surveys and excavations. You will consult with key stakeholders and provide archaeological expertise to locate, inventory, evaluate, and protect historic properties.

Responsibilities

• Design, initiate, administer, and participate in cultural resource surveys and excavations.
• Consult with the Washington State Historic Preservation Officer, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, Tribes, and the Department of Interior regarding program direction.
• Prepare and/or review documentation on properties for nomination to the National Register of Historical Places.
• Provide archaeological expertise in locating, inventorying, evaluating, and protecting historic properties.
• Maintain records of compliance efforts, including general and project-specific information.
• Conduct field investigations to collect archaeological and cultural environmental data.
• Analyze fieldwork data and generate reports to assess environmental compliance for large areas, such as military bases.
• Assist in assessing proposed projects or permits to ensure compliance with environmental or archaeological laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.

Requirements

Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. A Tier 1, Non-sensitive, Low Risk background is required throughout the appointment.

Basic Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in archeology or a related field with specific coursework:
  • 3 semester hours in the history of archeology.
  • 3 semester hours in archeology of a major geographical area (e.g., North America or Africa).
  • 3 semester hours in regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part of a major geographical area.
  • 3 semester hours in theory and methods of archeology (e.g., typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques).
  • Completion of an archeological field school.
  • 6 semester hours of related coursework in geography, geology, cultural geography, history, historiography, historical archeology, environmental studies, scientific writing, or surveying.
• Alternatively, a bachelor’s degree (or higher) in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted if the curriculum includes coursework equivalent to the above requirements, including an archeological field school.
• Combination of education and experience: College-level education or training that provided equivalent knowledge, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education.
• Four years of archeological work experience demonstrating thorough knowledge of professional archeology, including field experience in survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and report preparation.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-9 level, including:

• Conducting field investigations to collect archeological and cultural environmental data.
• Analyzing fieldwork data or generating reports to assess environmental compliance for large areas (e.g., military bases).
• Assisting archeologists in assessing proposed projects or permits for compliance with environmental or archeological laws and regulations.

OR

• Successfully completed a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree in archeology or a related field.
• Combination of specialized experience (less than one year) and graduate education (at least two years) totaling 100% of the requirements.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-9).
