Archaeological Field Technician

About the role

The Archaeological Field Technician will conduct basic archaeological fieldwork activities, including extended pedestrian survey, in-field analysis, shovel test pit (STP) excavation, test unit excavation, site documentation, and completion of archaeological site forms. Field Technicians will also provide general administrative and field support for large-block archaeological surveys, National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) evaluation projects, testing and evaluation efforts, and data recovery investigations.

Responsibilities

• Conduct archaeological surveys and site documentation.
• Perform shovel test pits (STPs), test unit excavations, and basic artifact and feature analyses.
• Use GPS/GNSS technology and other field mapping tools.
• Identify and document prehistoric and historic archaeological materials and features.
• Take clear, high-quality field photographs and maintain accurate, detailed field notes.
• Assist crew leaders with archaeological site forms, field records, maps, and other documentation.
• Work safely and effectively in remote field environments under variable conditions.

Requirements

• BA/BS degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a closely related field.
• Successful completion of an archaeological field school.
• Demonstrated experience conducting archaeological surveys and site documentation.
• Fundamental knowledge and experience using GPS/GNSS technology and other field mapping tools.
• Ability to identify and document prehistoric and historic archaeological materials and features.
• Experience conducting shovel test pits (STPs), test unit excavations, and basic artifact and feature analyses.
• Successful results of preemployment screenings, including federal background check, MVR, and drug screen.
• Compliance with company drug and alcohol policy.
• Authorization to work in the US or ability to obtain authorization by the start date.

• Prior archaeological experience in New Mexico and/or far West Texas (preferred but not required).

Pay

$18.33/hour.

Location Requirements

The position will primarily work onsite in El Paso, TX. Travel and per diem for lodging and meals are available on a reimbursable basis for qualified candidates whose primary residence is outside the El Paso, Texas, and Las Cruces, New Mexico areas. Field assignments may involve extended travel and work on large-block survey, NRHP evaluation, testing, monitoring, and data recovery projects throughout the region.
