About the role

Performs a wide range of building and grounds repair, lawn maintenance, custodial, and aquatic operations. Maintains pool filtration systems and keeps records on all repairs and operations.

Responsibilities

  • Clean and maintain the Amherst HealthPlex facilities and grounds (swimming pool, therapy pool, splash pad, locker rooms, family changing rooms, meeting/party rooms, exercise equipment areas, front office, concession area, playground, etc.).
  • Perform other custodial work, including trash and litter pickup and vacuuming the pools.
  • Perform a variety of landscaping maintenance including mowing, mulching, planting flowers, trees, and grass, watering, fertilizing and spraying, and pruning trees and shrubs.
  • Repair and paint furniture and equipment.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on equipment (e.g., mowers, trimmers, furniture, chemical controllers, and pool vacuums).
  • Operate a variety of vehicles and equipment, which may include trucks, ground maintenance equipment, and power and hand tools.
  • Provide preventative maintenance; inspect, maintain, and make repairs of facility and equipment (pumps, filters, motors, Dectron unit, rooftop units, HVAC, etc.).
  • Perform backwashing, clean baskets, change peristaltic/chemical feeder lines, change acid containers, work with and around chlorine, etc.
  • Assist with chemical balancing, water-quality testing, etc., upon request of the Facility Coordinator.
  • Schedule assignments, assign work orders, and report daily work progress to the Facility Coordinator.
  • Purchase supplies and equipment as authorized, following purchasing guidelines.
  • Attend and assist with pre-season orientation and periodic staff meetings and training; hold and maintain CPO/AFO certification.
  • Respond quickly to all emergency situations, operate emergency equipment, including AED and radios.
  • Educate patrons on rules, regulations, and safety issues.
  • Use excellent interpersonal skills to effectively work with supervisors, co-workers, and customers.
  • Perform special projects and related duties as apparent and assigned.
  • May be required to read and interpret sketches in connection with repairs or special projects, and diagnose mechanical failure or equipment.

Requirements

  • Completion of secondary education (high school or GED).
  • Over one year’s park or related field experience, or semi-skilled maintenance and repair experience, or two years’ experience in swimming pools.
  • Plumbing, electrical, and HVAC work experience and/or training (essential part of duties).
  • May be required to obtain a pesticide applicator’s license and a valid Ohio commercial driver’s license of the appropriate class with appropriate endorsement(s).
  • Must obtain an AFO or CPO license within six months of hire.
  • Must be tested and wear a respirator when working with chemicals within six months of hire.

Skills

  • Ability to communicate professionally and courteously with co-workers on a daily basis.
  • Ability to communicate in writing, complete forms, reports, etc.
  • Basic mathematical skills: add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
  • Working understanding of formulas, calculations, and mixtures commonly used in swimming pool operations.
  • Ability to carry out instructions, deal with problems involving several variables within a familiar context, and lead or direct work activities.
  • Ability to work with a minimum amount of supervision.

Licensing & Registrations

  • Possession of a valid Ohio driver’s license, insurable by the Park District’s insurance carrier, and ability to conform to the driving standards policy.
  • Must be able to pass a Respirator Fit Test and wear a respirator when working with chemicals.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to walk, talk, and hear; operate grounds maintenance and heavy machinery, work with hands, lift, use hand tools, and drive park vehicles.
  • Frequently required to stand; use hands to find, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
  • Occasionally required to sit, climb, or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.
  • Use of respirators is required.

Work Environment

  • Regularly works in outside weather conditions.
  • Spends a portion of the time working in a swimming pool environment.
  • Works with chemicals.
  • Frequently works near moving mechanical parts.
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Pay

$23.25 per hour
