About the role
Under the direction of the Branch Executive Director, the Aquatics Coordinator is responsible for the overall leadership, administration, supervision, and growth of aquatic programs at the Greater Ridgecrest YMCA. This position oversees aquatic staff, ensures a safe and welcoming environment, manages swim lesson and aquatic programming, and works to increase community engagement through aquatics.
Responsibilities
- Recruit, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate lifeguards, swim instructors, and aquatic staff.
- Ensure compliance with all YMCA, state, and local aquatic safety standards and risk management procedures.
- Oversee daily operations of the pool, including opening and closing procedures, maintenance reporting, and program readiness.
- Coordinate and grow aquatic programming including swim lessons, water fitness classes, swim team activities, special aquatic events, and community outreach programs.
- Build relationships with members, participants, schools, and community partners to increase awareness and participation in aquatic programs.
- Ensure all aquatic certifications remain current and assist staff in obtaining required certifications.
- Monitor program enrollment, attendance, and participant satisfaction and develop strategies to increase engagement.
- Assist with annual budgeting, revenue tracking, and expense management for aquatic programs.
- Support branch fundraising efforts, Annual Campaign initiatives, and special events.
- Collaborate with branch leadership to create a positive member experience and support overall YMCA operations.
- Coordinate the function under the direction of the supervisor.
- Create a nurturing and safe environment by reporting suspicious activity that may lead to child abuse or may violate the code of conduct.
- Keep supplies organized, maintain and clean facility and care for equipment.
- Keep a clean and organized work area.
- Ensure any communication reflects the YMCA voice.
- Always wear the YMCA staff shirt, name tag, SMART pin and appropriate attire.
- Distribute materials and make announcements as needed to promote function.
- Report any new or continuing problem that may arise.
- Role model SMART behavior.
- Supervise all staff and volunteers within the department.
- Meet budgetary responsibilities under the direction of the supervisor.
Success Measures (Year 1)
- Particular focus is on safety, staff development, program growth, and member engagement.
- Maintain full lifeguard coverage and required certifications for all aquatic staff.
- Increase swim lesson participation by 10%.
- Increase overall aquatic program enrollment by 10%.
- Achieve high member satisfaction scores related to aquatics programming.
- Successfully recruit, train, and retain qualified aquatic staff.
- Conduct regular staff trainings and safety drills throughout the year.
- Support branch Annual Campaign goals and community outreach initiatives.
- Maintain compliance with YMCA safety standards, audits, and risk management expectations.
Requirements
- High School graduate or equivalent required.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must complete Intro to the Y's Cause & Culture, Y's Way to Service & Engagement, and I Hear You: Service with CARE upon hire.
- Refer to current training plan for specific function to identify additional required trainings for this position.
- If supervising, Supervisor's Training preferred.
- Must have the ability to cooperate and work with YMCA staff to provide a quality program.
- Must demonstrate good communication and problem-solving skills along with a good understanding of the community.
- Must have the skills, knowledge, and genuine willingness to work with the community.
Skills
- Good verbal communication skills.

Physical Requirements
- Must be able to lift and carry at least 50 pounds.
- May be required to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
