About the role

The Apprentice Lineman I position is the first step of seven in the Lead Lineman training program. This position deals directly with ground-related work on overhead and underground electric service crews, including constructing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems for residential, commercial or industrial establishments. This position is the first of a seven-step progression to Lead Lineman.

Responsibilities

  • Aid in maintaining acceptable levels of standard materials on truck
  • Aid in all ground work while linemen are performing their duties
  • Aid in installing splices on de-energized U/G secondary and primary conductors
  • Aid in placing U/G transformers and pads
  • Aid in terminating U/G cables in transformers
  • Aid in the installation of streetlights and related equipment
  • Aid in framing and setting of poles
  • Aid in digging anchors and pulling wires
  • Operate safely chain saws and basic right of way skills
  • Drive ground rods
  • Place primary and secondary in trench in the construction of an U/G service or subdivision
  • Spot/locate other utilities while digging
  • Load/unload transformers and other material
  • Check voltage in meter base and service stubs using voltmeter
  • Aid in patrolling lines during outages
  • Aid in safe roadside work zone setup
  • Identify visually other utility's placement and identifying markers
  • Develop knowledge of electrical system hazard recognition
  • Develop knowledge of safe construction work practices

Requirements

  • Valid Georgia Driver's License
  • High school education or GED
  • One-year related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience

Qualifications

  • Read/interpret documents such as safety rules, operating & maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Understand and carry out detailed instructions
  • Speak effectively with customers or other employees
  • Know CPR and basic first aid
  • Work overtime as needed
  • Obtain Georgia Commercial Driver's License and Medical Examiner's Certificate of Qualification within 12 months
