Apprentice Line Worker I

About the Role

This is the entry-level position in the four-year Line Worker Apprentice program. The employee is expected to progress through the program and become a Journeyman Line Worker. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a Line Crew Leader.

Responsibilities

• Use apprentice-level knowledge of electrical line work to safely construct and maintain electric transmission and distribution lines.
• Work as a member of a crew involved in the construction, maintenance, and repair of electric distribution lines, substations, fiber optics, and meter facilities.
• Participate in standby rotation for after-hours emergency call outs.
• Operate digger truck to set and pull poles.
• Conduct switching throughout the distribution system and substations.
• Install and repair streetlights.
• Complete service orders and repairs on the electric system.
• Assist linemen with troubleshooting and repairing problems.
• Assist Line Trimmers as required.
• Assist with maintenance of fiber optic lines and communication lines.
• Clean and service tools, equipment, trucks, and other vehicles in the department fleet.
• Respond to emergency call outs for power outages.
• Perform pole top, bucket, and confined space rescue.
• Perform related tasks as required.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid Florida Driver’s License required; Commercial Driver’s License Class B.
• Availability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
• This position is mission-critical during emergencies.

Skills & Abilities

• General knowledge of the practices, methods, equipment, materials, and tools used in the construction and maintenance of electrical distribution and transmission systems.
• General knowledge of the occupational hazards connected with electrical transmission and distribution duties and the required safety precautions.
• Ability to perform manual work and physical stamina to withstand working under adverse weather conditions; ability to climb poles.
• Ability to perform pole top, bucket, and confined space rescue.
• Ability to understand and follow instructions in both oral and written form.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
• Ability to work under deadlines with constant interruptions.
• Ability to study and learn written Lineman Apprentice curriculum and pass tests to show knowledge; may require study outside of regular working hours.
• Skill in the use and care of tools of the trade.
• Must be able to communicate verbally clearly and concisely.
• Must have knowledge of the principles and practices of electric utility construction, operation, and maintenance.
• Must possess a general knowledge of all tools of trade: apparatuses, devices, and vehicles.
• Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.

Physical & Mental Demands

• Physically demanding work requiring lifting and handling equipment greater than 100 pounds, digging holes or trenches by hand, and assembling electric components.
• Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions with some indoor work required.
• Works with and around energized, high-voltage electric lines.
• Regularly works around heavy machinery and equipment.

Work Environment

• Primarily outside work exposed to all weather conditions, with some inside work required.
• Regularly visits job sites and traverses rough, uneven terrain in active construction areas.
