Job Summary Performs skilled work in the installation, maintenance and repair of electric transmission, distribution, substation, lighting and metering facilities. This is the entry level of the Line Worker Apprentice program. The employee is expected to progress through the four-year apprentice program and become a Journeyman Line Worker. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a Line Crew Leader. Essential Duties And Responsibilities Year one apprentice programUse apprentice-level knowledge of electrical line work to safely construct and maintain electric transmission and distribution linesWorks as a member of crew involved in the construction, maintenance and repair of electric distribution lines, substations, fiber optics, and meter facilities.Participates in standby rotation for after-hours emergency call outs.Operates digger truck to set and pull poles.Conducts switching throughout the distribution system and substations.Installs and repairs streetlights.Completes services orders and repairs on the electric system.Assists lineman with troubleshooting and repairing problems.Assists Line Trimmers as required.Assists with maintenance of fiber optic lines and communication lines.Cleans and services tools, equipment, trucks and other vehicles in department fleet.Responds to emergency call outs for power outagesPerforms related tasks as required. Supervisory Responsibilities None Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities General knowledge of the practices, methods, equipment, materials and tools used in the construction and maintenance of electrical distribution and transmission systems.General knowledge of the occupational hazards connected with electrical transmission and distribution duties and the safety precautions required.Ability to perform manual work and physical stamina to withstand working under adverse weather conditions; ability to climb poles.Ability to perform pole top, bucket, and confined space rescue; ability to understand and follow instructions in both oral and written form.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.Work under deadlines with constant interruptionsAbility to study and learn written Lineman Apprentice curriculum and pass tests to show knowledge, may require study outside of regular working hoursSkill in the use and care of tools of trade. Education And Experience High school diploma or equivalent. Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements Valid Florida Driver’s License required, and a Commercial Driver’s License Class BAvailability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidaysThis position is Mission Critical during emergencies. Essential Physical Skills This is physically demanding work requiring lifting and handling equipment greater than 100 pounds, digging holes or trenches by hand, and assembling electric components.The work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions with some indoor work required.Works with and around energized, high-voltage electric lines.Regularly works around heavy machinery and equipment. Mental Demands Must be able to communicate verbally clearly and concisely.Work under deadlines with constant interruptionsAbility to study and learn written Lineman Apprentice curriculum and pass tests to show knowledge. May require study outside of regular working hours.Must have knowledge of the principles and practices of electric utility construction, operation, and maintenance.Must possess a general knowledge of all tools of trade: apparatuses, devices, and vehicles.Ability to remain calm in stressful situations.
