Apprentice - Electrician

About the Role

Performs minor electrical service and repairs on a variety of electrical systems and equipment under direct supervision.

Responsibilities

• Lays out, assembles, installs, tests, maintains, services, and repairs conduits, meters, panels, control boards, lights, fans, heaters, bell systems, field lighting systems, clock systems, wall/floor/ceiling receptacles, and underground wiring.
• Bends, threads, and installs conduit for repairs and new installations.
• Determines routing of conduit and wire, and location/methods for installing panels, transformer switches, plugs, and junction boxes.
• Determines need for repairs or replacements and the most cost-efficient and safest method of restoring interrupted service.
• Computes wire size, power, and load limit requirements using charts and handbooks, considering amperage load and distance to power supply.
• Climbs ladders and poles to install or repair lamps.
• Performs mechanical operations to dismantle, disassemble, repair, reassemble, and install electrical units.
• Uses precision measuring devices and instruments to check or test circuits for overload and circuit amplitude.
• Responds to emergency calls as needed, including after-hours and/or weekends, under direct supervision.

Safety

• Performs preventive maintenance on tools and equipment to ensure safe operating condition.
• Follows established safety procedures and techniques, including lifting and climbing; operates tools and equipment according to safety protocols.
• Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and promptly reports non-correctable conditions to supervisor.

Travel Requirements

Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Physical & Mental Demands

• Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment, electrical measuring/testing equipment, hand/power tools, hoist.
• Posture: Prolonged sitting/standing; occasional stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing/pulling, twisting; works in tiring/uncomfortable positions.
• Motion: Frequent repetitive hand motions (keyboarding, mouse use); frequent walking, climbing, grasping, wrist flexion/extension, overhead reaching; occasional crouching/crawling.
• Lifting: Constantly exerts 10–20 lbs; frequently 25–50 lbs; occasionally 50–100 lbs.
• Environment: Works inside/outside, in trucks/vans, kitchens; exposed to slippery/uneven surfaces, extreme temperatures, machinery with moving parts, tight/enclosed spaces, heat from appliances, caustic chemicals; frequent reaching/feeling in confined spaces; occasional heights up to 50 ft; may require irregular/prolonged hours; frequent districtwide travel.
• Attendance: Regular and punctual attendance required.
• Mental Demands: Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions; may require irregular/prolonged hours or shift changes with little/no advance notice.

Qualifications

• Education: Accredited high school diploma, GED, or Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency required. Specialized training from a Fort Worth ISD CTE program, accredited college, technical, or trade school preferred.
• Certification/License: None.
• Experience: 1 year of general trade, maintenance, construction, mechanical, or installation experience. Successful completion of an approved Fort Worth ISD CTE program (e.g., Automotive Collision Repair, Automotive Technology, Aviation Maintenance, Construction Technology, Electrical Technology, Robotics and Automation, Welding) may substitute.
• Additional Requirements: Employees must provide necessary personal tools; FWISD does not replace stolen or broken personal property.
