Apprentice Cable Splicer
About the role
Network Underground Services (NUS) of Georgia Power provides construction & maintenance services for underground electrical systems across Georgia. The Apprentice Cable Splicer (ACS) positions are based in Atlanta, Augusta, and Savannah. The role involves assisting with the construction & maintenance of network underground systems and other high-reliability distribution systems.
Responsibilities
- Assist with the construction & maintenance of network underground systems and other high-reliability distribution systems.
- Learn the construction and maintenance activities associated with our Network & Hi-reliability Distribution systems, including operating procedures for all equipment involved.
- Work in enclosed spaces such as manholes, vaults, and tunnels, requiring access by ladders and working at heights in lifts, buckets, scaffolds, etc.
- Perform physically demanding tasks in extreme weather conditions.
- Work on-call during storm emergencies, including overnight and out-of-state travel.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least 1 year of work experience in construction, heavy industrial maintenance, utility, military, or electrical fields.
- Basic mechanical and electrical aptitude or background.
- Experience working outdoors, with heavy equipment/machinery, heavy load rigging/lifting, emergency responders, commercial truck driving, and/or farming.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights.
- Safe work practices with a history of working accident-free and injury-free.
Qualifications
- Valid driver's license.
- Pre-employment written exam (Construction and Skills Trade test).
- Post-offer employment test.
- Background check and DOT drug screen.
- Pre-employment physical exam.
Skills
- Basic mechanical aptitude and knowledge of hand tools.
- Proven ability to read, understand, and follow procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights.
- Safe work practices with a history of working accident-free and injury-free.
Benefits
The position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement and union membership is optional. Current starting pay for ALL NEW HIRES is $6,396/month or approximately $36.90/hour. Apprentice Cable Splicer candidates who receive job offers will be hired at this rate, regardless of experience/skills.
Pay
This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement between GPC and IBEW Local 84. Current starting pay for ALL NEW HIRES is $6,396/month or approximately $36.90/hour.
Schedule
The position requires flexibility and availability for call-out duties during storm emergencies, including overnight and out-of-state travel.
