About the role

This position will be filled as an Apprentice 1st Step - 3rd Step Lineman, depending upon experience. The apprentice will perform tasks involved in the construction and maintenance of electric transmission and distribution conductors, structures, underground systems, and related equipment.

Responsibilities

Under close supervision, the apprentice will assist in high and low voltage line work, including tasks such as:

  • Using pole climbing equipment and handling self on pole in a safe and efficient manner
  • Handling poles, installing poles, and assisting in the erection of wood and steel structures
  • Making up and installing guys and installing secondaries
  • Connecting services on energized conductors up to 600 volts
  • Installing secondary racks and clevis, anchors, miscellaneous hardware, grounds, fittings, and conductors on dead circuits
  • Performing simple transmission and distribution switching
  • Tying knots and splicing rope
  • Assisting in trimming trees and simple routine inspection and maintenance
  • Assisting in the installation of all types of conduit systems and transmission, distribution, and plant equipment
  • Preparing reports and records
  • Operating Company trucks and automobiles
  • Obtaining and maintaining a valid Class A CDL

Requirements

The apprentice will be required to perform tasks with varying levels of supervision, depending on their level of experience and training.

  • Apprentice 1st Year: Completion of an accredited Lineworker Training program or prior demonstrated linework experience
  • Apprentice 2nd Year: 2+ years demonstrated linework experience
  • Apprentice 3rd Year: 3+ years demonstrated linework experience

Qualifications

The apprentice must be willing and able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation. This includes:

  • Traversing uneven terrain with a full complement of tools
  • Working in extreme weather conditions
  • Working in confined spaces and at heights for extended periods
  • Performing physical tasks, including digging, pulling, pushing, carrying, and lifting up to 115 pounds
  • Maintaining a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License
  • Operating trucks and heavy equipment safely
  • Working safely around energized lines and equipment

Skills

The apprentice must have sound judgment, the ability to work safely in an inherently dangerous environment, and the ability to understand and follow safety rules. They must also be able to communicate effectively, manage stress, and handle tense situations.

Physical Qualifications

The apprentice must be willing and able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Personal Qualifications

The apprentice must be particularly alert in observing hazards and avoiding accidents, willing and able to attend and take part in safety meetings, and willing and able to work under unusual surroundings.
