Nature of Work

NATURE OF WORK:
Appraiser I Under general supervision, performs technical work of moderate difficulty in gathering property appraisal information and established property valuation as a sworn Deputy Assessor;
performs related work as assigned.
Appraiser Aide Under direct supervision, assists in technical work of routine difficulty in gathering property appraisal information;
performs related work as assigned.

  • Appraiser I TYPICAL DUTIES:
    • Physically locate and identify taxable property;
    • establishes value of real and personal property value for ad valorem taxation;
    • collects data on real and personal property;
    • responds to petitions for review;
    • prepares data for presentation in the administrative appeal process;
    • communicates with public on such matters as property values, ownership, legal description, property tax exemptions, and statutory classification;
    • assists in the training of entry level appraisers.
  • Appraiser Aide TYPICAL DUTIES:
    • Assists in establishing real and personal property value for ad valorem taxation;
    • collects data on real and personal property;
    • prepares data for presentation in the administrative appeal process;
    • communicates with public on such matters as property values, ownership, legal description, widow and veteran exemptions, and statutory classification.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Appraiser I Must possess Level I State of Arizona Appraiser Certification from the Department of Revenue as per ARS 42-13006;
    one (1) year general experience relating to the basics and fundamentals of residential and light commercial property appraisal;
    must possess and maintain a valid Arizona driver’s license and the ability to be covered by county insurance.
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved may be considered.
  • Appraiser Aide Must obtain Level I State of Arizona certification within one (1) year of employment as per ARS 42-123.02;
    must possess and maintain a valid Arizona driver’s license and the ability to be covered by county insurance.
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved may be considered.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Appraiser I Working Knowledge Of: map reading and property legal descriptions; the principles, practices and techniques used in property assessment; guidelines and statutes effecting property assessment.
  • Working Skill In: preparing sketches and diagrams of assessed buildings; making arithmetical computations.
  • Ability To: analyze and interpret the factors affecting property values; meet and deal tactfully with the public; read, write and speak English; prepare reports and present facts clearly, verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public; follow written and verbal instruction.
  • Appraiser Aide Working Knowledge Of: the principles, practices and techniques used in property assessment; guidelines and statutes effecting property assessment.
  • Working Skill In: preparing sketches and diagrams of assessed buildings; making arithmetical computations.

Work Environment

Work is primarily performed under general supervision. Incumbent generally performs work in a typical office setting with appropriate climate controls or in the field with exposure to a variety of climatic conditions. Requires driving and travel within the county.

Physical Demands

Essential functions of this position require: lifting, manual dexterity, large motor skills, ability to communicate. Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds requires a good deal of walking, standing, or involves sitting most of the time. Mental Application: Utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, critical thinking, adaptability and creative problem-solving skills are important.
