Applied Researcher I (AI Foundations, LLM Customization, Finetuning, Reinforcement Learning)

The AI Foundations team at Capital One is central to bringing our vision for AI to life. We work across the entire research lifecycle, from academic partnerships to production systems. We collaborate with product, technology, and business leaders to apply the latest in AI to our business needs.

Responsibilities

• Partner with a cross-functional team to develop AI-powered products that enhance customer interactions.
• Leverage diverse technologies like PyTorch, AWS UltraClusters, Huggingface, Lightning, and Vector Databases to analyze vast amounts of data.
• Create AI foundation models throughout the development process, from design to deployment.
• Engage in cutting-edge research to advance AI applications and customer experiences.
• Communicate complex AI concepts to stakeholders to align with business goals.

Requirements

• Currently pursuing or recently obtained a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, AI, Mathematics, or related fields.
• Experience with open-source tools and cloud computing platforms.
• Expertise in AI methodologies, particularly in areas like training optimization, self-supervised learning, robustness, explainability, and reinforcement learning.
• Track record of delivering large-scale AI models and solutions.
• Knowledge of transfer learning, model adaptation, and model guidance.
• Experience with large language models and fine-tuning techniques.
• Strong publication record in relevant conferences and journals.

Qualifications

• Advanced degree (PhD preferred) in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Computer Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Electrical Engineering, or related fields.
• At least 2 years of experience in applied research or equivalent.
• Experience with NLP and open-source datasets.
• Contributions to major open-source projects or corpora.
• Knowledge of tokenization, data quality, and dataset curation.

Skills

• Open-source programming languages and cloud computing platforms.
• Deep understanding of AI methodologies and foundational theories.
• Experience with large-scale model training and deployment.
• Ability to lead and manage research projects independently.

Pay

Salaries for this role vary by location, ranging from $218,700 to $272,300 annually for Applied Researcher I positions. Performance-based incentives may also be offered.

Schedule

This role is full-time and eligible for performance-based incentives.
