Job Summary
Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC) is seeking an Applied Music Instructor to teach Saxophone at the KCKCC Main Campus. The instructor will teach Applied Lessons and may teach other music courses as qualified. Applicants must have experience in both Western Art and American Jazz idioms.
Position Description
- Hold all class sessions according to schedule.
- Provide instruction, activities, assignments, and assessments to meet the Music Department Student Learning Outcomes for the specific course(s) taught.
- Use teaching methods that emphasize application, cooperation and collaboration and engage students actively in their studies, encouraging them to become independent learners with higher-order thinking skills.
- Organize and explain content using methods which are appropriate to students with differing abilities, levels of preparation, and cultural experience.
- Assign and provide feedback for in- and out-of-class work, monitor student progress.
- Perform adequate assessment and analysis of assessment according to college requirements.
- Reflect on and evaluate the effectiveness of one's own pedagogy.
- Perform other duties assigned by the appropriate supervisor.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Possess strong written and oral communication skills.
- Demonstrate a commitment to and ability to work with a multi-cultural student and faculty population.
- High energy, self-starter who can work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to develop and maintain excellent working relationships and establish credibility with all levels of employee in the organization.
- Detail-oriented.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 applications, especially Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Ability to manage several projects with multiple deadlines simultaneously.
Minimum Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Music Performance, Music Education or Jazz Studies; or substantial documented professional performance experience
- Three (3+) plus years’ professional performance experience on primary instrument
- Two (2) years’ teaching experience on primary instrument
Preferred Qualifications
- Doctoral degree in Music Performance, Music Education or Jazz Studies; or substantial documented professional performance experience
- Five (5+) plus years’ professional performance experience on a primary instrument
- Three (3) years of teaching experience on a primary instrument
- Teaching experience in an open-enrollment, urban community college
- Active performer on primary instrument
- Experience with a Learning Management System such as Blackboard
- Experience in learner-centered pedagogy
- Experience with jazz, musical theatre, or other styles of American Popular Music
Working Conditions
- Stand, talk, hear, walk, sit, and occasionally push or lift items.
Work Schedule
- Must be able to work a variable schedule/hour to meet operational needs. May require evening and weekend hours.
