Appalachian State University: Power Line Tech II

Primary Responsibilities

• Working with live high voltage conductors
• Maintenance of electrical equipment
• Installation of underground power lines
• Repair of overhead lines and poles
• Install and maintain NRLP’s fiber optic network cables
• Climbing, hand work, digging, heavy lifting, and all weather work is required
• Train and assist less experienced “B” lineworkers with the proper repair of live high and low voltage lines
• Use of various powered equipment and safety techniques including; climbing gear, bucket/digger trucks, excavators, high voltage gloves, and hoses

Job Requirements

• Knowledge, skills, and abilities involving the construction, maintenance, and repair of high-voltage underground and overhead primary and secondary electric distribution lines
• Thorough knowledge of all applicable codes and methods of installation and repair
• Ability to read and interpret schematics and recommend corrective actions
• Operate University owned vehicles and possess a valid driver’s license
• Journeyman level skills and knowledge, capable of completing both physical and technical duties
• Live or relocate to within approximately 20 minute commute of Boone within 90 days of hire
• High school graduate
• Credentials from an Electrical Utility Lineman School Program and 4 years of electrical Lineworker related work experience or 5 years of electrical Lineworker related work experience
• Holds DoL journeyman credentials
• Holds CDL Class B license
