Department of Hematology

The Department of Hematology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine seeks an experienced Hematology Advanced Practice Provider (HAPP) to join our dynamic team. This role involves a mix of inpatient and ambulatory care, with opportunities for research and clinical leadership.

  • Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assesses the physical and psychosocial status of clients through interviews, health histories, physical examinations, and diagnostic studies.
  • Works collaboratively with physicians to formulate treatment plans and manage patient care.
  • Writes prescriptions, performs diagnostic tests, and manages patient transitions between settings.
  • Interprets test results and communicates with physicians to ensure appropriate care.
  • Manages family dynamics and provides symptom management for patients undergoing hematological oncologic treatments.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary rounds and ensures comprehensive care for patients.
  • Performs specialized procedures such as bone marrow biopsies, lumbar punctures, and skin biopsies.
  • Assists with peer-to-peer training for advanced practice providers.

Core Qualifications

  • Education: Master’s degree in relevant field.
  • Certification and Licensing: Valid State of Florida HAPP license or PA license.
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes: Ability to exercise sound judgment, complete tasks accurately, prioritize work, collaborate, and communicate effectively.

Specific Qualifications

  • State License: Board certification and CITI certification within three months of employment.
  • BLS and ACLS certifications.
  • Minimum of two years of Hematology experience as an Advanced Practice Provider.
  • OCN or AOCNP certification preferred.

  • Hematology APP Supervisor/Director
  • Division Chief of Hematology
  • Collaborating Physician

Department of Hematology Specific Job Functions

In addition to the core job functions, the Hematology HAPP will:

  • Rotate with colleagues for weekend and holiday call from Sylvester patients.
  • Communicate with triage nurses regarding patients needing symptom management, evaluation, and treatment.
  • Prioritize consults and attend rounds with attending physicians.
  • Write consult inpatient notes, discharge notes, and dictate as necessary.
  • Perform Hematology consultations and inpatient care at UMH as needed.
  • Facilitate clinical research protocols and coordinate patient care with research staff.
  • Interview and examine research subjects, evaluate their appropriateness for study inclusion/enrollment, and monitor study-related labs and imaging.
  • Report Serious Adverse Events (SAEs) and Adverse Events (AEs) to designated research staff.
  • Communicate with Principal Investigators (PIs) and Sub-PIs regarding study-related matters.
  • Perform study-related procedures if competency is met.
