Responsibilities

• Assisting the MD with admissions, ED Consultations, GYN Consultations, First Assisting on Labor and Delivery and in the Operating Room and labor management.
• Back up deliveries and amniotomies as scope allows.
• Maintain and record information in medical records or provide narrative summaries to communicate patient information to other health care providers.
• Provides guidance to expectant mothers in prenatal self-care, e.g. nutrition, weight gain, and daily activity levels.
• Maintains records of patient conditions and test results within care plans.
• May order and interpret diagnostic or laboratory tests as well as prescribe medications as permitted by state regulations.
• Maintains a full range of primary health care services for women from adolescence beyond menopause, including primary care, gynecologic and family planning services, preconception care, care during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period, care of the normal newborn during the first 28 days of life, and treatment of male partners for sexually transmitted infections.
• Conducts physical examinations; prescribes medications including controlled substances and contraceptive methods; admits, manages and discharges patients; orders and interprets laboratory and diagnostic tests and orders the use of medical devices.
• Provides health promotion, disease prevention, and individualized wellness education and counseling.

Requirements

• Master’s degree, Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) or Doctorate in Philosophy (PhD) level education required from an approved accredited nursing educational program of the American College of Nurse Midwives (ACNM) and American Midwifery Certification Board Medical (AMCB).
• Currently holds an unencumbered license as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) based on state requirements and Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM).
• Maintains current registered nursing (RN) license and APRN CNM licensure where the practice is occurring and/or possesses multistate licensure if in a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state.
• Must pass certification examination as stipulated by the appropriate state board.
• Maintains appointment at their respective Sanford facility.
• Obtains and subsequently maintains required department specific competencies and certifications.

Qualifications

• Must work within the legal scope of practice and subject to the states’ legal constraints and regulations for all licenses held.
• Required to obtain and maintain approval of applicable scope of practice.

Skills

• Basic Life Support (BLS) required.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Obtains and subsequently maintains required department specific competencies and certifications.
• Privileging documents and related credentialing requirements will supersede this job description in defining minimum qualifications, criteria, and scope of practice, if variation between documents exists.
