APA TRAINEE, ASSOCIATE, LEAD OR SENIOR ASSISTANT PROSECUTING ATTORNEY (PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE)

Multiple positions available: Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Trainee, Associate Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, Lead Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, and Senior Assistant Prosecuting Attorney.

Pay

• Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Trainee: $21.5995 hourly ($44,927 annually)
• Associate Assistant Prosecuting Attorney: $42.3361 hourly ($88,059 annually), Step A: $44.6716 hourly ($92,917 annually)
• Lead Assistant Prosecuting Attorney: $48.4183 hourly ($100,710 annually), Step A: $50.8250 hourly ($105,716 annually), Step B: $53.2313 hourly ($110,721 annually), Step C: $54.8279 hourly ($114,042 annually)
• Senior Assistant Prosecuting Attorney: $55.3606 hourly ($115,150 annually), Step A: $57.5745 hourly ($119,755 annually), Step B: $60.9236 hourly ($126,721 annually), Step C: $66.0005 hourly ($137,281 annually)

Qualifications

• Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Trainee: Graduation from an accredited law school.
• Associate Assistant Prosecuting Attorney: Graduation from an accredited law school and a member of the State Bar of Michigan in good standing. Additionally, one of the following: Judicial clerkship experience, Internship/Externship experience, Law School Clinic Experience, or Moot Court Team Experience.
• Lead Assistant Prosecuting Attorney: Graduation from an accredited law school and a member of the State Bar of Michigan in good standing. Additionally, either: Three years' experience as a lawyer, or two years' experience as a Prosecuting Attorney, or one year experience as a prosecuting attorney and one year combined experience as a judicial clerk and prosecution internship/externship.
• Senior Assistant Prosecuting Attorney: Graduation from an accredited law school and a member of the State Bar of Michigan in good standing. Additionally, either: Eight years' experience as a lawyer conducting complex litigation with at least 10 jury trials, 25 bench trials, or 20 oral arguments in the appellate courts; or five years' experience as a prosecutor with at least 10 felony jury trials or a combination of 10 misdemeanor jury trials and 25 bench trials or 15 oral arguments in the appellate court; or twenty years' experience in a Prosecutor's Office.

About the Role

Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Trainee: Performs a variety of legal tasks in Probate, District, and Circuit Courts which includes legal research, representation of the County in legal proceedings and court cases, and developing legal opinions. Works under supervision.

Associate Assistant Prosecuting Attorney: Performs a wide variety of legal tasks in Circuit (Criminal and Family Court) and District Court with occasional Probate Court appearances.

Lead Assistant Prosecuting Attorney: Performs a wide variety of legal tasks in Circuit (Criminal and Family Court) and District Court with occasional Probate Court appearances.

Senior Assistant Prosecuting Attorney: Performs a wide variety of legal tasks in Circuit (Criminal and Family Court), District Court with occasional Probate Court appearances, or if assigned to the Appeals Bureau, in the Court of Appeals or Supreme Court.

Responsibilities

• Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Trainee:
  • Prepares and tries cases in Probate, District, and Circuit Courts.
  • Interviews complainants and issues orders for warrants in criminal cases.
  • Furnishes information on inquiries and complaints submitted to the office of the Prosecuting Attorney.
  • Prepares and follows up on extradition cases.
  • Takes statements from suspects and participates in various hearings when summoned by State, City, or County officials.
  • Handles hearings in Probate Court for economically disadvantaged people, hears commitments, and juvenile cases.
• Associate Assistant Prosecuting Attorney:
  • Appears at arraignments, pretrials, probable cause conferences, preliminary examinations, preliminary hearings, review hearings, dispositional hearings, and misdemeanor sentence hearings.
  • Represents the People in traffic enforcement matters before the District Court.
  • Represents the People in probation violation and show cause matters.
  • Conducts trials in misdemeanor, juvenile delinquency, neglect-abuse, and mental commitment cases.
  • Assists senior APA staff in conducting felony trials or other complex litigation matters.
  • Interviews complainants and police officers relative to criminal cases the APA is prosecuting to prepare for court hearings.
  • Conducts legal research.
  • Attends community meetings and law enforcement agency meetings at the direction of the elected prosecutor.
• Lead Assistant Prosecuting Attorney:
  • Appears at arraignments, pretrials, probable cause conferences, preliminary examinations, preliminary hearings, review hearings, dispositional hearings, and misdemeanor sentence hearings.
  • Represents the People in traffic enforcement matters before the District Court.
  • Represents the People in probation violation and show cause matters.
  • Conducts felony and misdemeanor trials, juvenile delinquency, neglect-abuse trials, and mental commitment trials.
  • Interviews complainants and police officers relative to criminal cases the APA is prosecuting to prepare for court hearings.
  • Conducts legal research.
  • Attends community meetings and law enforcement agency meetings at the direction of the elected prosecutor.
  • Assists senior staff in complex litigation matters.
  • Provides training to the law enforcement community and other prosecutors.
  • Reviews law enforcement requests for arrest warrants.
  • Drafts or reviews search warrants.
  • Prepares and manages forfeiture and nuisance abatement matters.
  • Serves on advisory committee to the elected prosecutor as requested.
• Senior Assistant Prosecuting Attorney:
  • Represents the People in court proceedings, including arraignments, trials, hearings, and probation violations.
  • Handles cases involving misdemeanors, felonies, juvenile delinquency, neglect-abuse, and mental commitments.
  • Interviews complainants and law enforcement to prepare for hearings.
  • Conducts legal research and drafts or reviews search and arrest warrants.
  • Participates in complex litigation, including homicide, sexual assault, and gang-related cases.
  • Serves as lead counsel in trials and mentors junior attorneys.
  • Attends community and law enforcement meetings as assigned.
  • Provides training to prosecutors and law enforcement personnel.
  • Prepares and manages forfeiture and nuisance abatement matters.
  • Responds to motions and represents the office in appellate courts when assigned.
  • Serves on advisory committees as requested by the elected prosecutor.
