About the Role

This is moderately complex work providing customer service, clerical support, and animal care at a large animal control shelter operation. The employee greets and welcomes all visitors, including residents interested in adopting, finding a lost pet, renewing a license, or seeking assistance from other department programs. Animal Services Representatives work courteously and skillfully with customers and animals, ensuring safety for all in the lobby environment.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate excellent customer service attitude and skills, both in person and over the phone.
  • Greet and welcome all visitors to Animal Services.
  • Facilitate all major services residents seek, including adoption, lost pet recovery, license renewal, and nuisance complaints.
  • Proactively respond to customer needs using knowledge of pet breeds, animal characteristics, and county policies.
  • Complete all animal and customer service transactions.
  • Perform computer-related duties, including data entry, retrieval, and routine operations.
  • Produce business correspondence, reports, and documents.
  • Perform routine cashier, billing, receipt, clerical, and filing duties.
  • Check for licensing and inoculation of animals admitted to the kennel; record animal history, weight, food intake, and tags (microchips, vaccination, or license).
  • Assist customers with adoptions, lost pet searches, animal intake (strays and surrenders), and license renewals.
  • Rotate duties between in-person customer service, phone support, lost animal research, mail processing, and administrative tasks.
  • Perform cleaning, feeding, and other care or custodial activities to maintain animal welfare in the Adoption Area.
  • Keyboard up to 35 words per minute, depending on assignment.
  • Perform related work as assigned or required.

Requirements

  • At least 3 months of animal care/training experience or coursework in veterinary technology; or
  • At least 2 years of office support experience dealing with administrative matters, customer accounts, and computer/office equipment use in the veterinary field; or
  • An associate degree, trade school, or vocational training degree, diploma, or certificate in veterinary technology; or
  • A bachelor’s or higher-level degree with major coursework in veterinary technology.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid Florida Driver’s License upon hire, with eligibility based on Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) evaluation.
  • Ability to work in close proximity with animals (cats and dogs) and handle them safely.
  • Willingness to work a variety of schedules, including compulsory work during emergencies or disasters.
  • Ability to work on-site at the Animal Services facility (12450 Ulmerton Road, Largo, FL 33774).

Skills

  • Proficient in cash handling (highly desirable).
  • Experience providing customer service in challenging environments (highly desirable).

Schedule

Monday–Saturday, 8:30 AM–6:15 PM on a rotating schedule. Days off may change.
