Responsibilities

  • Provides direct supervision over Animal Services Officers and Animal Services Officer Leads;
  • Oversees and performs enforcement functions related to the care, control, licensing, impoundment and euthanasia of animals;
  • Manages conflict resolution and de-escalation of potentially hostile situations;
  • Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal codes and laws;
  • Interviews the public, assesses information, and makes determinations;
  • Manages and maintains records of animal cases;
  • Coordinates with other departments and agencies to ensure effective animal management;
  • Responds to emergencies and calls for assistance;
  • Assists in the development and implementation of policies and procedures;
  • Participates in training and professional development activities;
  • Performs administrative tasks such as scheduling, budgeting, and reporting.

Requirements

  • Three years of full-time experience as an Animal Control/Services Officer; OR four years of full-time progressively responsible experience in the care and handling of animals in a professional work environment including interviewing the public, assessing information and making determinations; OR four years of active duty military experience OR four years of full-time experience in the enforcement of local, state or federal codes/laws; OR an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Qualifications

  • A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and must be maintained for continued employment for this classification.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid National Animal Care and Control Association ACO I and ACO II certification or equivalent is required within one year of appointment and must be maintained for continued employment in this classification.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid certification as a euthanasia technician is required within one year of appointment and must be maintained for continued employment for this classification.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid pharmacy certificate/controlled substance license is required within one year of appointment and must be maintained for continued employment for this classification.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Training Instructor certification for Oleoresin Capsicum Spray, Pepperball Launcher, and ASP Baton required within one year of appointment and must be maintained for continued employment within this classification.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a certificate in chemical capture within one year of appointment and must be maintained for continued employment within this classification.

Benefits

Field operations run seven days a week, 8:00 am to 10:00 pm. Field Supervisors work nights, weekends and on-call shifts. Shifts are assigned through a shift bid system - for more information, please refer to the WCEA Supervisory Contract 2024-2028, Article 12 - Shift Differential/Shift Bidding (Labor Relations - Washoe County).

Pay

Salary range: $44,000 - $60,000 annually, commensurate with experience.

Schedule

Field operations run seven days a week, 8:00 am to 10:00 pm. Field Supervisors work nights, weekends and on-call shifts. Shifts are assigned through a shift bid system - for more information, please refer to the WCEA Supervisory Contract 2024-2028, Article 12 - Shift Differential/Shift Bidding (Labor Relations - Washoe County).
