Animal Keeper - African Elephant Crossing

About the role

The Animal Keeper at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is responsible for the care and management of African elephants, African birds, meerkats, naked mole rats, and a rock python. Key responsibilities include providing high-quality care, maintaining husbandry standards, adhering to safety guidelines, and participating in training and research initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Provides food, water, medications, and supplements as indicated by schedules, prescriptions, or diet boards.
• Completes and reviews daily activity reports, diet consumption reports, behavior and/or training records, enrichment records, or any other written documentation on assigned animals.
• Cleans, maintains, and disinfects animal enclosures and service areas.
• Observes individual animals daily and reports animal behavior, appearance, fecal conditions, and unique characteristics.
• Performs proper restraint techniques for crating, transferring, or veterinary procedures.
• Maintains pest control in assigned areas.
• Prepares and enhances animal areas for aesthetic, reproductive, behavior, and safety purposes.
• Samples and records water analysis.
• Trains assigned animals for husbandry and enrichment.
• Responds to hazardous or potentially unsafe situations by taking corrective action and notifying supervisory staff.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in animal science, biology, zoology, or a related field.
• Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in animal care or conservation.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a motor vehicle.
• Ability to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays.

Skills

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

• Ability to follow detailed instructions and work independently.
• Experience with animal husbandry and conservation practices.

Pay

$20.00 - $25.00 per hour based on experience.
