About the role
The Animal Keeper at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is responsible for the care and management of African elephants, African birds, meerkats, naked mole rats, and a rock python. Key responsibilities include providing high-quality care, maintaining husbandry standards, adhering to safety guidelines, and participating in training and research initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Provides food, water, medications, and supplements as indicated by schedules, prescriptions, or diet boards.
- Completes and reviews daily activity reports, diet consumption reports, behavior and/or training records, enrichment records, or any other written documentation on assigned animals.
- Cleans, maintains, and disinfects animal enclosures and service areas.
- Observes individual animals daily and reports animal behavior, appearance, fecal conditions, and unique characteristics.
- Performs proper restraint techniques for crating, transferring, or veterinary procedures.
- Maintains pest control in assigned areas.
- Prepares and enhances animal areas for aesthetic, reproductive, behavior, and safety purposes.
- Samples and records water analysis.
- Trains assigned animals for husbandry and enrichment.
- Responds to hazardous or potentially unsafe situations by taking corrective action and notifying supervisory staff.
Requirements
- Possesses a proven working knowledge of animal husbandry.
- Has a strong conservation ethic.
- Exhibits exceptional interpersonal skills.
- Displays strong leadership abilities.
- Adheres to all safety and operational guidelines.
- Supports the philosophy and goals of the elephant program.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in animal science, biology, zoology, or a related field.
- Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in animal care or conservation.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a motor vehicle.
- Ability to work flexible hours including weekends and holidays.
Skills
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of animal behavior and enrichment techniques.
- Ability to follow detailed instructions and work independently.
- Experience with animal husbandry and conservation practices.

Pay
$20.00 - $25.00 per hour based on experience.
