About the role

The Animal Care Technician position at the City of Farmington's Animal Shelter is a temporary, part-time role. The position involves caring for and finding forever homes for homeless animals in the Four Corners area. Key responsibilities include kennel operations, animal care, and fostering a welcoming environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day operational support within assigned kennel areas.
  • Communicate daily goals and objectives clearly to team members.
  • Support consistency in animal care procedures.
  • Ensure tasks are completed in a safe, timely, and organized manner.
  • Report operational concerns, animal care issues, or workflow barriers promptly.
  • Perform routine animal care, including bathing and grooming.
  • Monitor and report health, behavior, or temperament issues to medical and behavior staff.
  • Reduce stress and disease in the shelter environment through compassionate handling and placement.
  • Assist with animal intake, evaluation, and medical treatments.
  • Perform euthanasia using humane and accepted practices.
  • Clean and maintain shelter kennels, cages, and facilities.
  • Provide excellent customer service to adopters, staff, volunteers, and the public.
  • Facilitate the pet adoption process and answer customer questions.
  • Work cooperatively with volunteers and other employees.
  • Operate a motor vehicle to assist in departmental activities.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to receive money and make proper change.
  • Must obtain Euthanasia Certification within one year of hire.
  • Ability to work around various animals without an allergic reaction.
  • Emotional coping ability regarding euthanasia.
  • Experience in animal care and customer service preferred.
  • Valid New Mexico driver's license with acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays.
  • Committed to the mission, values, goals, and success of the FRAS with compassion and genuine affection for animals.
  • Strong communication skills and outgoing, polite, and professional manner.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, supervisors, and the public.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and follow verbal and written instructions.
