Animal Care Assistant 1

About the role

This position is responsible for the daily care of animals, including feeding, cleaning, exercising, and monitoring their behavior and health. The role also includes assisting with animal intake, evaluation, and medical treatments, as well as responding to patron inquiries related to animal health education.

Responsibilities

• Perform animal care and related duties, such as feeding, cleaning, exercising, and monitoring the behavior and health of animals in shelter custody.
• Provide appropriate food and water, as well as basic grooming and bathing for animals.
• Clean animal cages, run, and perform general housekeeping of the shelter.
• Assist with animal handling, including transferring and relocating animals from vehicles, cages, and housing units.
• Maintain animal care reports and documentation.
• Complete intake and care reports, and prepare related reports or record keeping as required.
• Respond to patron inquiries related to animal health education and related programs.
• Provide humane education pamphlets or materials.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Must be a Certified Animal Euthanasia Technician (CAET), or obtain certification within six months of hire.
• Must receive pre-exposure rabies vaccinations.

Qualifications

• Basic animal welfare standards, including safe animal handling procedures for domestic and wild animals.
• Proper use, secure storage, and disposal of lethal chemicals, syringes, and related equipment.
• Avoidance of animal bites, scratches, and diseases such as Rabies, Ringworm, Lyme disease, and Zoonosis.

Skills

• Knowledge of basic animal welfare standards.
• Ability to handle animals safely and humanely.
• Proficiency in using and disposing of lethal chemicals and equipment.
