Anesthesiology
Island Health has an opportunity for a full-time Anesthesiologist to join a team of five colleagues in a busy anesthesia practice at the Cowichan District Hospital. The hospital is expanding services to meet growing surgical demand and preparing for the opening of a new facility in 2027.
About the Facility
The Cowichan District Hospital is a 134-bed acute care facility with a collegial atmosphere among general and specialty medical staff. Local family physicians maintain full-service practices and provide inpatient care, while maternity primary care is supported by the Cowichan Maternity Clinic and midwives.
Specialist services include Anesthesiology, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Radiology. Surgical services cover General and Orthopedic Surgery, Urology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, ENT, Ophthalmology, and Plastic Surgery. The emergency department is staffed by dedicated emergency physicians.
The new Cowichan District Hospital, expected to open in 2027, will feature over 200 inpatient beds, expanded OR and ICU capacity, and state-of-the-art equipment. The anesthesiology team is projected to grow to 8 FTEs upon relocation.
Members are affiliated with the University of British Columbia’s Island Medical Program and participate in teaching medical students and residents.
Responsibilities
- Provide anesthesia services in a high-volume surgical environment.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of specialists and family physicians.
- Participate in medical education through teaching medical students and residents.
Benefits and Incentives
- Eligibility for additional remuneration under the Rural Subsidiary Agreement (RSA), including:
- Retention Premium: 4.20%
- Retention Flat Fee: $6,509
- Relocation Funding: Up to $15,000 (amount based on location relocating from)
- Recruitment Incentive: $10,000 (full-time)
