American Sign Language (ASL)-English Interpreter
Position Summary
American Sign Language (ASL)/English Interpreter supports JCCC’s mission by providing accurate, effective, and culturally responsive interpretation and translation services to support equitable access for Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH) students, faculty, and staff. The incumbent facilitates communication across academic and institutional settings and promotes inclusion through professional expertise and cultural competence.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in interpreter training or a related field.
- 5+ years of relevant experience. NIC, RID CI and CT certification or BEI certification required.
Position details include but are not limited to:
- Interpretation & Communication Services:
- Provide ASL and English interpretation services in a variety of settings, including classes, meetings, and institutional events.
- Prepare for assignments by reviewing course materials, meeting agendas, terminology, and relevant documents to ensure accurate and effective interpretation.
- Translation & Instructional Support:
- Translate course materials, meeting documents, and related communications as needed to ensure accessibility.
- Serve as a communication facilitator between Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HH) individuals and students, faculty, and staff.
- Promote awareness, sensitivity, and respect for cultural and linguistic differences within the D/HH community.
- Professional Standards & Development:
- Maintain professional standards of confidentiality, ethics, and impartiality in accordance with institutional policies and interpreting best practices.
- Remain current in the field of interpretation through participation in workshops, professional meetings, certification maintenance, and continuing education.
- Other duties as assigned:
- Duties and responsibilities, as required by business necessity, may be updated at any time at the discretion of management.
