American Sign Language (ASL) Educational Interpreter

Position Purpose

Under the supervision of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing Coordinator and Special Education Director, the primary responsibility is to provide American Sign Language interpreting services for students who are deaf or hard-of hearing within the general education, resource, or self-contained classrooms. The mode of communication utilized will be at a language level appropriate for the child.

Essential Job Functions

• Facilitates communication among students who are deaf or hard-of hearing and their hearing peers, the classroom teacher, and other personnel in the school system.
• Assist with record-keeping procedures to document student learning and performance.
• Assist in designing classroom for student access.
• Other duties that may be performed when not interpreting include tutoring, note-taking, preparing materials, and working with small groups.
• Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper manner of assistance for all students, including those with disabilities or other special needs.
• Perform any other related duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

• Ability to accurately interpret/transliterate at a normal conversational rate in situations where students with hearing impairments (or parents) are present utilizing American Sign Language.
• Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.
• Adherence to Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and other federal and state laws and regulations regarding education and students with disabilities.
• Support educational team to provide students who are deaf/hard of hearing appropriate opportunities to benefit from their education.

Qualifications

• Valid Indiana license as an Educational Interpreter which requires:
  • Either passage of the EIPA written test and a score of 3.5 or higher on the EIPA skill test OR proof of RID certification.
  • Commit to obtaining 36 hours of professional development growth every two years while employed by AWSSC with 18 hours in skill development and 18 hours in other areas as required by license renewal.
