About the Role

The Adult Pulmonary Function Laboratory is part of the Cardiovascular Research Institute. It conducts tests for clinical evaluation and treatment of patients with pulmonary diseases, referred from UCSF medical center or outside facilities. The lab also supports clinical research protocols and provides training for medical students, residents, and Pulmonary Fellows.

This role supervises pulmonary function technicians, ensuring compliance, quality, and timeliness of work. Responsibilities include mentoring and training new technicians, scheduling, timekeeping, and providing direction. The position implements procedural changes to improve operational efficiencies and collaborates with lab directors and managers to propose improvements.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise pulmonary function technicians to ensure compliance, quality, and timeliness of work.
  • Mentor and train new technicians.
  • Provide scheduling, timekeeping, and direction for PF techs.
  • Implement changes or new procedures to improve operational efficiencies.
  • Ensure work is completed in compliance with internal standards and external regulations.
  • Collaborate with PF Lab Attendance, Directors, and managers to propose procedural improvements.
  • Apply analytical and critical thinking skills to analyze problems and determine appropriate interventions.
  • Produce reports and analyses, conveying complex administrative, clinical, and technical information clearly.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent combination of experience/training.
  • Minimum 3 years of related experience.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience as a lead, supervisor, or manager.
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Solid interpersonal skills for effective communication and problem-solving with staff, management, and external agencies.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to convey complex information clearly.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supervising support staff in clinic or center administration.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Knowledge of practice operations, patient-scheduling systems, medical and insurance terminology, and regulatory requirements.
  • Familiarity with information systems and patient service standards.
  • Basic knowledge of human resources management policies, including training, monitoring, evaluating, and documenting performance.
  • Proficiency in business software and specialized applications for clinic/center operations.
