About the Role

Alternative sentencing helps the community and clients by addressing the root causes of nonviolent, drug-related offenses. The Department of Public Advocacy represents indigent clients in criminal cases, focusing on rehabilitation rather than incarceration. As an Alternative Sentencing Worker (ASW), you will assist clients with substance abuse or mental health disorders, helping them become productive members of their community and reuniting families.

You will work as part of the defense team in the Louisville Trial Office, conducting assessments and preparing alternative sentences that typically include treatment components such as inpatient, outpatient, short-term, or long-term mental health or substance abuse treatment.

Note: Due to applicable state or federal laws, employees in this position are prohibited from using medical cannabis, even though it has been legalized in Kentucky.

Responsibilities

• Conduct client assessments to determine specific needs related to substance abuse or mental health.
• Prepare alternative sentencing plans that include treatment components.
• Advocate for clients and explore options to support their rehabilitation.
• Work collaboratively as part of a defense team in a trial office setting.
• Communicate effectively both verbally and in written reports.
• Multitask, prioritize, and work independently with self-motivation.
• Travel frequently for fieldwork and client-related activities.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in social work, sociology, psychology, family studies, counseling, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
• Bachelor’s degree supplemented by one year of professional experience in social work, substance use disorder, or mental health may substitute for the required education.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
• Must maintain any required licensure, certification, or credentials for the duration of employment.

Pay

Annual salary range: $39,284.88 - $58,927.20.

Schedule

37.5 hours per week. Full-time position with a 6-month probationary period.
