Northern Colorado Regional Airport (FNL) is a commercial Service Airport under the FAA’s Part 139 and TSA 1542. FNL is the 5th busiest airport in Colorado. With major infrastructure investments including a new terminal building and a $20M runway widening project, FNL is increasing commercial air service and continued regional growth.

About the role

The Airport Operations Technician supports and maintains a safe, compliant, and efficient airfield environment for all airport users. Under the direction of the Airport Operations Manager, this role ensures the airport’s operational safety, regulatory compliance, and airfield readiness. The position performs daily airfield inspections, maintenance, repairs, and operational tasks required to meet FAA Part 139 standards and TSA Part 1542 security requirements.

This role works collaboratively with the operations team, FAA, ATC, Certification and Security Inspectors, city departments, local police and fire, and all stakeholders including airlines, corporate and general aviation tenants while promoting a positive, professional, and safety-focused work culture.

Requires weekend availability and twenty-four (24) hour on-call response for events such as aircraft emergencies, special events, and snow removal during winter months, including weekends and holidays. Must pass TSA background check requirements and obtain clearance to work within airport secured areas.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and document daily airfield inspections in accordance with FAA Part 139 regulations and advisory circulars during all 4 defined seasons of Colorado.
  • Maintain compliance with all airfield safety, operational, and security standards outlined in the Airport Certification Manual and TSA Part 1542 and the Airport Security Plan.
  • Respond to airfield incidents, irregular operations, tenant concerns, and emergency situations.
  • Operate aviation radios and support 24/7 nonemergency airport communications.
  • After required training, assist the Airport Security Coordinator with airport security compliance and enforcement of the Airport Security Plan.
  • Perform all duties safely within an active airfield environment.
  • Monitor airport weather conditions and issue Notices to Air Missions (NOTAMS) as needed to ensure safe airport operations.
  • Support winter operations, including snow and ice control using heavy and light equipment.
  • Assist with airfield construction oversight to ensure compliance with FAA, Federal, state, and local rules and safety requirements.
  • Conduct maintenance, repair, and alteration of airfield pavements, lighting systems, buildings, hangars, grounds, and airport equipment.
  • Perform wildlife hazard management in accordance with FAA 139 requirements outlined in the airport compliance manual, including monitoring wildlife activity, implementing mitigation measures, and safely deploying approved wildlife controls.
  • Issue inspection work orders, complete work orders, and issue safety notices to airmen (NOTAMS) as directed by the Supervisor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • 2 years of experience working in airport operations.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Must pass TSA background check and obtain clearance to work within airport secured areas.
  • Weekend availability and 24-hour on-call response for emergencies, special events, and snow removal.

Qualifications

  • Required: 2 years or Associate Degree in aviation or related field.
  • Preferred: 4 years or Bachelor’s Degree in aviation or related field.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for education requirements on a year-for-year basis.

Skills

  • Strong understanding of airport operations, airfield safety, and regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to interpret and apply FAA Part 139 and TSA Part 1542 requirements.
  • Effective written and verbal communication, including use of aviation radio communications.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical work indoors and outdoors, including lifting, climbing, and equipment operation.
  • Proficient with computers, Microsoft platforms, and mobile devices.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, colleagues, tenants, and the public.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

  • Frequent minimal physical effort typically found in clerical work (primarily sedentary, occasional light lifting).
  • Occasional light to moderate physical effort (frequent standing, walking, or repetitive tasks).
  • Occasional moderate to considerable physical effort (working from ladders, lifting 25-50 lbs, using medium-weight tools).
  • Occasional strenuous to extreme physical effort (frequent use of heavy objects over 50 lbs, strenuous application in awkward positions).
  • Frequent exposure to heat, noise, and outdoor elements.
  • Occasional exposure to hazardous conditions (working at heights, fly ash, energized electrical equipment).
  • Performs duties in multiple airport locations, including runways, taxiways, and buildings.
  • Required to drive motorized vehicles, climb ladders, push, pull, stoop, kneel, and crawl to perform essential job functions.

Pay

The salary range for this position is $25.42 - $34.32 per hour, with a hiring range of $25.42 - $29.87, depending on qualifications and experience.
