Aircraft Powerplant Mechanic I

About the role

Amentum is hiring qualified Aircraft Powerplant Mechanic I’s in support of U.S. Navy Aviation maintenance operations at NAS Norfolk, VA (VAW-120). This mechanic troubleshoots malfunctions in aircraft structure, landing gear, flight surfaces and controls, anti-icing, pneudraulic, engines, auxiliary power unit, and ventilation and heating systems. Duties include repairing, replacing, and rebuilding aircraft structures and components using hand tools, power tools, machines, and equipment such as shears, sheet metal brake, welding equipment, rivet gun, and drills.

Responsibilities

• Read and interpret manufacturers’ and airline maintenance manuals, service bulletins, technical data, engineering data, and specifications to determine repair or replacement methods.
• Perform progressive, phase, periodic, hourly, conditional, or calendar inspections; examine reciprocating and jet engines for cracks, corrosion, foreign object damage, burns, distortions, warping, wear, and missing segments.
• Test engine operation using equipment such as ignition analyzers, compression checkers, distributors, ammeters, and jet calibration testers to locate malfunctions.
• Install, maintain, and service aircraft engines, fuel and lubrication systems, drive accessories, and gearboxes; handle and service aircraft ashore and aboard ships.
• Perform complete turboshaft/turboprop engine repair and analyze engine degradation using oil analysis tests; evaluate jet engine performance for fixed turbojet engines.
• Perform propeller repairs, replace or repair components such as carburetors, alternators, magnetos, fuel controls, pumps, and engine-mounted gearboxes; remove engines using hoists or forklifts, disassemble and inspect parts, repair or replace defective components, and reassemble and reinstall engines.
• Adjust, repair, or replace electrical wiring systems and aircraft accessories; perform preflight, thru-flight, and post-flight maintenance inspections.
• Service aircraft by flushing crankcases, cleaning screens and filters, greasing moving parts, and checking brakes; supervise jacking and towing of aircraft.
• Enter descriptions of work performed in maintenance records and verify satisfactory completion; may service engines and airframe components at line stations to keep aircraft in safe operating condition.
• May specialize in structural, precision, and functional spare parts assembly or engine repair; may be required to be licensed by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Requirements

• Minimum five (5) years of actual and recent organizational-level E-2C aircraft maintenance experience, with three years prior E-2C Collateral Duty Inspector (CDI) or Quality Assurance Representative experience.
• High school graduate or equivalent; completion of Navy Aviation Machinist Mate’s “A” School.
• Knowledge and use of special tools/equipment required to perform assigned maintenance tasks is mandatory.
• Must be physically able to perform all assigned duties; ability to read and interpret technical publications, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Self-motivated with ability to work with minimal supervision; must meet physical requirements and pass applicable medical examinations.
• Must obtain CDI within 30 days of hire/promotion date; must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization and a T3 Secret Eligible status.
• U.S. Citizenship required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.
• Must be able to obtain an approved status from the Contractor Verification system, including a 7-year background check.
• Valid Virginia or North Carolina driver’s license (if North Carolina resident).

Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands

Work is performed primarily outdoors under all types of weather conditions with exposure to loud noise and exhaust fumes. The employee is regularly required to stand, climb, bend, stoop, walk, reach, and use hands to handle tools and equipment; frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, and taste or smell. Frequently lifts items weighing 15–25 pounds and occasionally in excess of 45 pounds.

Pay

Hourly rate of pay: $38.74 (set by CBA). In accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the hourly wage will increase to $39.90 on or around June 1, 2027.
